Let's take this back to the very beginning...

The photograph features André Mellet, owner of Winch Braid, during his early childhood between the ages of six and eight, highlighting how fishing was already a significant part of his life from a young age.

For André Mellet, fishing has always been more than just a pastime – it has been a lifelong passion. Raised in a family deeply involved in the sport, he grew up watching both his parents compete in angling competitions. His mother earned several awards for landing some of the biggest catches of her time, while his father spent countless hours along the shoreline pursuing his love for fishing. Surrounded by the sport from an early age, it was only natural that André would develop a passion of his own.

His angling journey began in freshwater fishing, where he proudly represented Gauteng as a young angler. Following his move to the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, his focus shifted to saltwater angling, opening the door to an impressive competitive career that would see him progress from provincial representation to competing on the international stage.

Since 2011, André has represented the Zululand Masters team and has established himself as a respected competitor within South African angling circles. His dedication, skill and consistent performances earned him South African President's Colours as a Master Angler in 2019, allowing him to represent South Africa against Namibia at the annual international gala competition. He was once again awarded President's Colours in 2021 and represented South Africa against Namibia in Jeffreys Bay.

André's commitment to the sport continued to be recognised as he competed in SASAA and the Zululand League for Mfolozi. In 2022, he was selected as one of Zululand's Grandmasters and competed at the Grandmasters South African Championship in Jeffreys Bay. This achievement marked another important milestone in a career built on dedication, perseverance and a deep love for the sport.

In 2023, André earned his South African Colours and proudly represented South Africa against Namibia. His outstanding performances saw him retain his national status, once again earning South African Colours in 2024 and 2025 to compete against Namibia. These achievements firmly established him among the country's elite anglers and highlighted his continued excellence at the highest level of competition.

Today, André is preparing to represent South Africa once again in Namibia in December 2026, adding yet another chapter to an angling journey that spans decades of achievement and commitment.

Away from competitive angling, André's entrepreneurial spirit led to the creation of Winch Braid. What began as a small side business quickly gained momentum through its reputation for quality and performance. After three successful years, the brand had grown to such an extent that André made the decision to manage Winch Braid full-time from December 2021.

Today, Winch Braid is a trusted name among anglers, with a loyal customer base throughout South Africa and a growing presence in Namibia. The brand continues to expand, with opportunities being explored in Mozambique, Kenya and Australia.

From representing Gauteng as a young freshwater angler to representing Zululand and South Africa as a Grandmaster, André's journey is a testament to passion, dedication and excellence. Through both his competitive achievements and the success of Winch Braid, he has built a legacy that continues to inspire anglers across Southern Africa.
