Get out of pain and into shape with me

28/07/2026

Most people over 40 who train regularly assume that high-rep wall balls will inevitably leave their lower back stiff or their knees aching for days.

They blame getting older or a bad joint.

The reality is more specific. What feels like a restricted ankle is rarely just an ankle problem.

To perform an efficient wall ball, you must drop into a deep, upright squat. If your heels lift or your chest collapses forward, your brain forces your lower back to over-arch and your knees to absorb the shock. The ankle is where the compensation shows up. It is almost never where the problem started.

A braced or restricted pattern somewhere else in the body — a locked hip, a guarded thoracic spine, a fascial line under tension from an old injury — is what causes the ankle to feel restricted in the first place. The body is always protecting something upstream.

Generic calf stretching will not fix that. It cannot. It is treating the symptom at the wrong address.

This is why the Lyno assessment is a full body process. We do not start at the ankle. We map the entire fascial system to find where the original restriction lives, trace how it is expressing itself downstream, and clear it at the source.

When the root pattern is released, the ankle frees up. The lower back stops overworking. Power transfers efficiently and your joints stay protected for the 75+ horizon.

Stop treating where it hurts. Find where it started.

Drop "ASSESS" below to map your full restriction pattern.

Most people over 40 who are serious about training assume that lingering knee pain, tight hips, or taking three days to recover from a workout is just part of getting older.

It isn't.

When you lose explosive power, it is rarely because your muscles are ageing. It is because your brain is locking down joints to protect you from hidden structural restrictions.

The barbell power clean demands speed and uninhibited movement. But if your ankles are locked or your fascia is restricted, your lower back and knees will overwork to absorb the force.

That is how dynamic training turns into joint decay.

I use the The Lyno Method to pinpoint exactly where your fascia is locked and clear those structural bottlenecks before they become the thing absorbing force they were never designed to handle.

Clearing the root restriction allows your frame to absorb force correctly. You train explosively, recover faster, and move with total autonomy at 75 and beyond.

Stop guessing why your joints hurt after training.

Drop "ASSESS" below to map where your movement pattern is breaking down.

Train with intent.

Two weeks ago, we looked at how the Bulgarian split squat isolates raw, side-to-side leg strength discrepancies.

The kettlebell single-leg, single-arm deadlift takes that diagnostic exposure a step deeper. It introduces a cross-body spiral.

This movement forces the foot, the hip, and the opposite shoulder to communicate under load. If there is a hidden fascial restriction anywhere along that diagonal line, this pattern will immediately expose it.

My eye is not watching the weight. I am watching for the exact moment the arch of the foot collapses, the hip rotates outward, or the trailing leg drops early to find stability.

Those micro-compensations are the brain's way of bypassing a restriction.

If you ignore those subtle shifts and simply layer heavy volume on top of them, you are not just building strength. You are building a chronic pain pattern that will eventually demand your attention.

Catching and correcting these structural leaks today is what keeps you out of that cycle and moving with full autonomy at 75 and beyond.

When you do this movement, where does your body cheat first? The foot, the hip, or the shoulder? Drop it below.

Train with intent.

Most people squat. Very few actually know which leg is doing the work.

As someone who has been through an ACL repair, I favour unilateral strength work. It is the only way to ensure the surgical side isn't hiding behind the healthy one.

Bilateral movements have a massive blind spot. The stronger side quietly compensates and the brain never flags it. You feel balanced because the total load is being managed.

You are not balanced. You are just well-compensated.

On the PEAK floor, we test this directly. After heavy back squats, we take a percentage of that max and test Front Rack Step-Ups on each leg. That is when the discrepancy shows up. It always shows up.

Outside of floor testing, the Bulgarian split squat is one way I address my own discrepancy. This is what that looks like in practice.
Left versus right gaps are among the most reliable predictors of knee and hip degradation over time. Unilateral testing exposes the gap. Fascial assessment and Bunkie testing trace it to the source.

Which side feels like a completely different person is operating the leg?

Drop "LEFT" or "RIGHT" below.

Train with intent.

Most training programs skip a critical first step. They load the body without checking whether it's moving evenly in the first place.

When one side of your body holds more tension than the other, your movement adapts around it. That adaptation becomes a habit. That habit gets loaded in the gym and over time, the joints pay the price.

Sometimes the signal is subtle. A hip that sits differently. A shoulder that won't open fully. One side always tighter than the other.

But sometimes the signal is chronic pain. Here's what most people don't realise. That pain is often not the root problem. It's the body's way of flagging tension that has been ignored or trained around for too long.

This is where the Lyno Method does its best work. It finds those restricted patterns and through breath, movement and gentle touch, restores movement before any load goes through the body. Whether you're dealing with subtle asymmetry or persistent pain, you address the restriction first. Then you train.

Strength built on a compensated pattern doesn't fix it. It deepens it.

Move free. Then move heavy.

Train with intent.

At 48, the goal changes. It stops being about looking fit and starts being about staying capable. Not just at 60. At 75. And beyond.

Most people slow down to protect themselves. The problem is, slowing down is exactly what speeds up the losses.

Fast-twitch muscle fibers drive your power, speed and balance. They respond to intensity. Low-effort training simply doesn't reach them.

Your brain's ability to recruit muscle efficiently works the same way. Without regular high-intensity effort, that connection weakens long before your muscles do.

Training at your high-intensity threshold at 48 isn't reckless. That threshold looks different for everyone. Knowing when to push and when to pull back is the skill. Done with that awareness, and with good loading and proper recovery, it's the smartest thing you can do for the next 30 years.

What you preserve now, you get to use later.

Train with intent.
