Light Yagami Still Looms Large in Anime History
Light Yagami is the central figure of Death Note, the 2006 psychological thriller produced by Madhouse.
A top student who finds a supernatural notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written in it, Light takes on the alias Kira and begins killing criminals to build what he sees as a perfect world.
The 37 episode series became known for its high tension mind games between Light and his rival, the detective known as L. Their battle of logic, ego, and strategy helped push anime deeper into mainstream global conversation and classroom debate territory at the same time.
The show’s themes around justice and power made it a hit and a controversy magnet. It was restricted or banned in some regions, including China and Russia, due to concerns about its influence on younger viewers.
