AVAILABLE FOR PART LOAN, to stay at current yard just outside Romsey.

Due to my new injury and now going into the second year of university, Rocky will need a little more work to occupy him. He is a 10-year-old 16.2 thoroughbred gelding.

We're looking for a lightweight (max 12 stones / 75 kg) experienced rider to keep him ticking over, ideally riding one or two days a week but open to negotiation, hacking and flatwork only.

He is not a novice ride and can be sensitive but he loves his hacking and will go alone or in company with just the occasional spook - nothing significant, he tends to just stop and stare. He's quite low mileage and can be anxious, but he will try his heart out for you once he trusts you.

He lives out 24/7 on a small and friendly DIY yard. We don't have a school, but we do have a riding paddock when the ground is suitable and direct access to private woodland with great hacking routes.

Yard duties are therefore minimal, but you would be required to poo pick and top up water on your days. Other owners ride at various times of day, so there is often someone to hack with.

You will need your own transport as we're over a mile from the nearest bus stop. Your own rider insurance and references will also be required.Please contact Wendy Rees by DM as comments may be missed.

John Whitaker, a true legend within the equestrian world, celebrated his 70th birthday a week ago, and these words demonstrate exactly why he has been so successful during his decades-long career.

First and foremost, he takes the time to establish a relationship with each of his horses, meaning that they want to try their best for him, and he for them. Once you and your horse form a partnership, based on a mutual love and respect, everything else becomes so much easier.

So, if you want to make your riding career a successful one, then first of all, you must make sure that your horse is your team mate and your friend.

There’s no more tomorrows
No more rides
No more cantering down your favourite track. No more listening to his hooves as you trot down the road. No more Sunday afternoon walks. No more “us” time.
Never say you’ll ride tomorrow, because you never know how many tomorrows you have left. You’ll never know when will be the last time you land a perfect round, or that perfect square halt.
You’ll never know when the last time will be when you amble down those beautiful paths in the summer sun. You’ll never know when will be the last time you reach for the saddle.

So ride. Ride like every time is the last time. Like ever canter, trot, walk, jump and halt is your last. Come home smiling from ear to ear, even if the ride didn’t go as planned.
Give him a pat, a treat, a hug, a kiss. Tell him that he was amazing and you love him. Because even when it doesn’t go right, it may be the last time you get to dream of your goals on his back.

What I’d give to be able to ace a jump course, a perfect halt, to canter down our track, to hear his hooves beat against the road. To reach for his saddle.

So ride it like you stole it. Because each time, you’re stealing back a tomorrow.
