Cooloola is the second entry for the inaugural Lord Howe Ocean Race 2026

Alan Hill is the latest skipper to enter the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club's (RPAYC) inaugural Lord Howe Ocean Race, with Cooloola set to line up for the biennial event, starting on the this year's October long weekend.

Alan Hill commented, “The race is an opportunity to sail the boat in the open sea away from the maddening crowds and put the boat through its paces with the excellent crew, many of whom helped sail the boat on the race to Auckland last October. I am also keen to support the RPAYC, who are the organisers of this race.”

“I like the fact that the race is continuous, starting from Pittwater and ending there. The duration enables the rhythm of the watches to settle into a good routine. Our primary motivation is to enjoy the experience. We shall, of course, do our best to perform to the best of our abilities''.

Starting from Broken Bay on Pittwater on Friday 2 October, the race category 1 yacht race will take the fleet around Balls Pyramid off Lord Howe Island and return to the finish back at Pittwater covering 890nm – one long continuous race.

RPAYC Bluewater Pointscore Series – Race 4 Underway

📰 Pittwater to Newcastle and Return

Competitors in the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club's Bluewater Pointscore Series set sail this morning for Race 4 – the Pittwater to Newcastle and Return Race, with a clean start at 1000hrs.

The offshore passage takes competitors north along the NSW coastline to Newcastle before returning to Pittwater, providing another important test of navigation, weather strategy and endurance as the series enters its second half. The course is expected to challenge crews with changing coastal conditions and an overnight passage before the run home.

Today's Bureau of Meteorology forecast indicates south to southeasterly winds around 10 knots on Pittwater, with a 60–70% chance of showers and a maximum temperature of 16°C. Offshore, a 1.5–2.0 metre southeasterly swell is expected to greet the fleet once they clear Barrenjoey, making for a tactical opening leg before crews settle into their offshore watch systems.

With a mixed forecast offering light southerly winds, passing showers and an offshore swell, strategy will be just as important as boat speed. Crews will be looking to position themselves for the best pressure along the coast while managing the sea state as they make their way towards Newcastle.

The Pittwater to Newcastle and Return Race continues RPAYC's proud offshore racing tradition, providing valuable experience for both established offshore campaigners and crews preparing for longer Category 2 events later in the season.

David Lukins Memorial Regatta

The event will be a two-day Match Racing event in the Elliott 7's. Grade 5 Open Match Racing Regatta. Current and Former Youth Development Athletes and Members are invited to submit their Team Entry. A great event to reunite and get back out onto Pittwater.

The Regatta is held in memory of David Lukins. David was a tireless volunteer around the club, which resulted in David receiving one of the club’s most prestigious awards, Volunteer of the Year for 1998-99.

📰 Team AUS 🥈second in the Youth Match Racing Worlds in Middelfart, Denmark

What a week! That is pretty much the general feeling among sailors, officials, event organisers, sponsors and spectators as the junior match racing world championship comes to an end.

After a week of intense racing in the Danish heatwave, it all came down to the last 200 metres in race five of five in the final. USA, Morgan Pinckney, Kelly Holthus, Cam Spriggs, Jacob Posner, Alice Schmid are the 2026 world champions.

A heatwave has made sure everything from the temperatures to the intensity on the race course has been close to the boiling point. Even though the 12 teams from 11 nations have been tested to the limit of their abilities and stamina, the race committee completed all 104 races despite the wind being light and shifty throughout the race week.

"Even though we got the start right, and the umpires gave Daniel (Kemp, AUS) a penalty, I got a little nervous on the first beat, and he reeled us back in. He got ahead and killed his penalty, then we got ahead just before the last windward mark and managed to stay in the lead until the finish thanks to great crew work – I am so happy to be sailing with these guys, said Morgan Pickney after their gold medal was secured".

📰 Kemp AND Pinckney on course for finals at Youth Match Racing Worlds!

Both teams lead their semi-finals 2–0 after another long and tricky day in the Danish heatwave.

June 24, 2026 – Middelfart, Denmark: As the clock passed 19:30 on Wednesday evening, the sailors returned to shore after almost 10 hours on the water in blazing sunshine and an extraordinary Danish heatwave.

The conditions had taken their toll on most of the teams, with sailors cooling off in the water during breaks or seeking shade below deck whenever possible.

The heat was also turned up on the racecourse, where the sailors once again showed impressive skill, despite all competitors being born in 2003 or later.

“The breeze was pretty fluky this morning, so we were really happy to take the first win against Victor and his team. Then we were lucky to have a bit of a break and get out of the sun while the rest of the quarter-finals were decided before going back out to meet Rossing in the semis,” said Kemp.
“Both races against Mathias were really close, so we are very happy to take a 2–0 lead,” he added after a long day of racing against the Danes.
