Where do I even begin? The Randy Titus Gunslinger 75 happened yesterday, and what a night it was!
First off, I want to say a huge thank you to Melinda and Janice for putting together what was, without a doubt, one of the best races yet. You guys put countless hours into making this the biggest and best event possible, and it definitely showed. Huge props to you both, as well as every sponsor who helped make this race what it was. We can’t thank you enough for everything you did, and we’re already looking forward to next year! 🏁
Let’s Talk About Our Night
We’ve been having some struggles with the car mid season lately, so we tested a couple of weeks ago trying to get it where we needed it for this race. We ended up making about 15 laps before blowing a transmission. The race was supposed to be that weekend, so Thursday night we pulled the transmission, got up at 7:00 a.m., shoved it back in, and got ready to go racing Saturday.
Unfortunately, the race ended up getting cancelled, but I want to give a huge shoutout to Alex, Daniel, Kyle, and everyone else who helped get this car ready to go racing that weekend. We couldn’t have done it without you guys!
That gave us another week off, so we decided to test again this week before race day to see if we could finally figure this car out. We threw everything we could at it, but we just couldn’t find the sweet spot. Everything we changed was either not enough or too much.
At the end of the day, we basically said, “Let’s see what race day brings.”
And that’s exactly what we did.
We struggled all day long. The car had zero handle and was down on power, and honestly, we figured we maybe had a top-10 car going into the race.
We started the day in pole position, second heat, and got out front to start turning laps. Then, on Lap 2, the steering wheel locked solid and sent me straight into the beach. At that point, we thought our day was done.
We got towed back to the pits and started tearing into it to figure out what happened. Eventually, we noticed the steering shaft was hitting the firewall and had jammed up. We pulled the shaft up a bit and got it moving again.
Going into the feature, we thought for sure the rack and pinion may have locked up, so we decided to go out there and see what happened—whether it was the rack or the steering shaft hitting the firewall.
We started 20th.
The green flag dropped, and we started picking cars off one by one.
We got passed by the 15 car, and the plan became to follow him toward the front—and that’s exactly what we did until he ended up blowing a tire.
We then ran door-to-door with the 75 car for about 10 laps of hard, clean racing. That was awesome! That’s the kind of racing Randy and I always had, and he’ll tell you—we always had fun doing it. 🏁
Around Lap 40, there was a caution, and we had worked our way up to 8th place.
On the restart, we started picking off more cars. By around Lap 50, we were up to 4th and had caught the 22 car.
We had one hell of a run with Brandon—bumping, banging, and racing hard together. That was some awesome, clean, hard racing. Great race, Brandon!
Eventually, got by, and I was sitting in 3rd place.
Then I saw the 44 car all over my mirror around Lap 71. I tried to make it three-wide with the 88 and 151 so he could get stuck behind them—but that didn’t quite work out the way I planned. 😅
I ended up spinning the 88 car because I had nowhere to go. That meant we were both supposed to go to the back, but I tapped my roof to give him his position back.
I guess there were only six cars left on the lead lap, which put us 6th for the final couple-lap shootout.
We got a good jump on Brian, tucked in front of him, and crossed the line in 5th place.
After the race, we found out we had zero right-front tire left!
After post-race tech, we were officially awarded 4th place! 🏁🔥
Considering everything we fought through to get this car better, I’m extremely happy to bring home a top-five finish.
Now it’s time to get this thing better for SpeedWeekend. We’ll have a new engine going in, give the car a good once-over, and hopefully show up with a bad-fast race car!
