Highly recommend having your horses tested!

When most owners think of Cushing's (PPID) in horses, they think of a long, dull haircoat, that doesn’t shed well, as the key sign. While this is a strong indicator that your horse should be tested, this is unfortunately a sign of more advanced disease. Some other signs you might see are:

A little heart goes a long way. ♥️🔨

This heart bar package was applied under veterinary prescription for a horse recovering from a severe abscess that ruptured through an old scar—causing significant damage, discomfort, and lameness.

The heart bar has a fascinating place in farriery history. Although variations have existed for generations, its modern therapeutic use was largely popularized by farrier Burney Chapman for supporting horses with laminitis and founder.

Unlike a traditional open-heeled shoe, the heart bar extends across the frog. When it is fitted and applied correctly, this allows the frog and back half of the foot to share more of the load. Depending on the individual case, heart bars may be used to:

• Support the internal structures of the foot
• Help redistribute weight away from a damaged or painful area
• Stabilize the hoof capsule
• Support compromised heels and the caudal portion of the foot
• Assist in certain cases involving laminitis, founder, cracks, abscess damage, or hoof-wall loss

Under the shoe and frog plate, I packed the foot with Blue Hoof Company’s Blue Hoof Clay to help protect the enclosed area against thrush and unwanted bacterial growth.

I genuinely enjoyed this shoeing application. Cases like this bring together veterinarian-guided care, thoughtful mechanics, and the opportunity to create meaningful support for a horse that needs it. 🐴

Lameness isn’t always obvious—and a horse that looks “a little off” may only show changes under certain circumstances.

The AAEP’s 0–5 Lameness Grading Scale helps veterinarians consistently describe the severity of what they observe. Lower grades may be difficult to detect or only appear while circling, carrying weight or moving on certain surfaces. Higher grades are consistently visible at the trot or walk and may involve limited weight bearing.

This scale helps assign a grade to provide a consistent way to document severity, communicate with the horse’s care team and follow changes throughout treatment or rehabilitation.
