I bought a V-Strom 650 in late 2011, under the instigation of my good friend and future riding buddy Gabe. We explored many nooks and crannies of Southern Ohio and expanded our radius as the years went along. In 2015 I moved from Columbus back to my hometown of Youngstown, OH. The seeds of what would become Appalachian ADV were born from my good buddy Gabe, further greenhoused by a trip out west with a military buddy and great friend Shane and a newfound friend from Western PA whom we shall call OGB.

The V-Strom saw more and more dirt and gravel road action and off-road style terrain as my skills progressed. Exploring the Ohio River Valley, Allegheny National Forest, The PA Wilds, Bald Eagle, and a ton of great terrain in between sparked my interest in trying my hand at building a couple of events. December of 2019 saw the birth of the AppalachianADV.com website. Mother Nature delayed my start a bit but the first official Rally that would become known as The Fools Ride on April Fools' Ride and first official Tour that would become known as Explore The PA Wilds Four Tour happened in the summer of 2020.

This is a selection of V-Strom photos from the beginning of my ADV journey right up to that first rally in the Northeast Ohio River Valley. Future posts will pick up where this one leaves off including the birth of the

Closing out the Group Clinics for the year with a bang! Our final Level 2 Intermediate+ down in Fools Ride Territory this past weekend. We still have a handful of Private Clinics coming up and room for a few more! Visit AppalachianADV.com and Email [email protected] to set something up!

Join Appalachian ADV at Lake Way Powersports in Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania and in Fools Ride Territory near Richmond, Ohio for - One and Two day - ADV & Dual Sport - Group and Private - Riding Clinics!

These Clinics are intended to familiarize riders with the theory, physics, and skills necessary to ride ADV and Dual Sport bikes on gravel and dirt surfaces (16+ with motorcycle endorsed license, riders' bring their own bikes). Group Clinics include 6-10 Riders and 1-2 Certified Motorcycle Coaches Certified Coaches!

In the first session we start with bike set up and ergonomics then build upon each aspect from bike lifting techniques through bike balance, friction zone, body positioning, braking drills, steering techniques, maintaining and breaking traction, line selection and tire placement, managing and negotiating obstacles (ruts, rocks, loose gravel, small logs, potholes, hill climb and hill climb recovery, mud, etc.).

The second session takes us into the real world, building on the skills & drills from the previous session. Gravel roads, trees, rocks, ruts and other natural features replace the cones. The controlled environment at Base Camp is replaced by a semi-controlled environment when we hit the road. We review how to interpret terrain features that have been weathered and run through by other off-road vehicles.

Our clinics are designed to have a more practical approach and hit basic fundamentals so that riders can gain a solid foundation, experience, and confidence in their machines and themselves.

Can you expect an Event or Clinic to go smoothly with no issues?
Not all the time!  We have put in hours upon hours, miles upon miles to plan out each event and we do that to help mitigate as many issues as possible. ADV means adventure and with adventure there is a touch of the unknown. The weather, the road/trail conditions or blockages, potential mechanical issues, or any one of a myriad of troubles could come across our path.  But with risk, comes reward. We started this thing to give people the opportunity to have an experience, to meet a group of fellow adventure seekers, and work as individuals on a team to get us through each day.  Sometimes the issues are the most memorable part of an adventure.

"[The] Clinic was absolutely superb. Kane is an amazing teacher. (I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go.) But the group was also so helpful. Everytime I fell/got stuck, all of [them] came rushing in to help." -Sony from Suwanee, Georgia

"Returning to the dirt after 54 years on the street so wanted to update my skills. Just completed a one-day Private Clinic with Kane and one word sums it up, “AWESOME!”. Kane is such a knowledgeable and talented instructor. His coaching skills are spot on. He helps you set small goals and then uses positive reinforcement to assure you achieve them. He assures your safety and well-being by never pushing you above your abilities, can tell when you need a break and makes sure you stay hydrated. I highly recommend his clinics for anyone wanting to improve their Adventure or Dual Sport riding skill!" -Walt from Akron, Ohio

"You're doing a really good thing for the beginners of, not just Adventure, but riding as a whole. You were very organized and covered everything you need to know." - Cody from Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania

"What a great time. Being new to the ADV world and having a Harley-Davidson Pan America, Kane showed me what this bike is capable of. I learned tons of techniques and gained confidence in handling off road obstacles." -Matt from Cleveland, Ohio

"Kane Wagner is a wonderful ADV riding instructor. His clinics are so helpful to learn and apply the basic skills needed to take your riding adventures to the next level." -Tambra from Titusville, Pennsylvania

"What an awesome weekend! You are a great instructor with much knowledge! What great courage you gave me to try new things. 'I knew I didn’t know a lot but I didn’t know I didn’t know that much.' Can’t wait for your level 2 class!!!!" -Dave from Cross Plains, Wisconsin

"As a new rider, the training aspect is critical. The learning curve of piloting my 485lb bike off road is steep (sometimes very steep). After a training clinic with Kane you get the techniques to then go out and practice those things that you may never have discovered on your own. I also think training informs you what kind of riding you like to do. There's so many ADV style bikes out there, you need to get out and get dirty to find what you like best and then find the bike that best lets you enjoy that aspect of adventure riding." - Phillip from New Albany, Ohio

"Very good course! I got into ADV riding 3 years ago but haven’t tested my skills like I did this weekend. Highly recommended if you want to learn some new practice drills to sharpen your off-road riding ability and improve confidence. No classroom, you’re learning while on your bike all day, which was perfect for me." -Dan from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania

"Would definitely recommend the clinic I have been off-road on dirt bikes all my life and Kane taught me some things... on my Honda CB500X Rally Raid." -Steven from Boardman, Ohio

"In this class we all worked hard AND had so much fun. The class is set up perfectly with one day of drills followed by one day of riding on diverse terrain. Kane and Tom are amazing instructors/people. A great group of students too, differing experience levels (I'm a total newbie), and everyone was super supportive. It was cool seeing how everyone's confidence levels and skills shot up dramatically at the completion of the first day." -Tony from Fairport, New York

"Out of all of the trainers I've worked with, Kane Wagner is the absolute best coach! His feedback and classes are so personalized and wonderful! He's a treasure to the ADV community!" -Scott from Akron, Ohio

"Really enjoyed the clinic. Many tips and practice for getting comfortable with your bike. Kane and Marsh covered clutch, braking, throttle, balancing, slow speed turning, control and other facets of riding. Where else are you encouraged to lock up your rear brake in thick gravel and grass, spin your tire, lift the front wheel over obstacles, options to turn around, options to get going without sitting on the bike and my favorite - climbing on your bike from the right side (non kick stand side)! I was worn out at the end of the day." -Dave from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

"Had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Got me thinking of all the fundamentals as I'm riding. Kane and Tom are great instructors who enjoy what they do. Can't recommend them enough. See you at the Fools Ride!" -Daniel from Huntingtown, Maryland

"I really enjoyed Saturday's clinic and got a lot out of it. I appreciate your expertise, your patient teaching style, and your attention to detail in helping me and the others. It was just the right degree of difficulty for me, everything I did was a challenge but nothing was so overwhelming that it felt way over my head. It was good to get out of my comfort zone and I feel a lot more confident now, especially after the group ride at the end. Really a good group of guys too. I will definitely recommend your clinics to others." Jim from Brunswick, Ohio

"Thank you for your time, patience, knowledge and encouragement the past two days [at the private clinic]. I’m a much better and more confident rider because of it." - Chris from Dublin, Ohio

"I appreciate the classes you teach. You cater to who you have, encourage taking risks but never push, and let people grow." -Josh from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania

"Kane is a talented off-road rider that cares deeply about the expansion of the sport of Adventure Motorcycling. His tours are well planned, supported and have varying levels of challenge with enough time to smell the roses and experience the views. The meals were fantastic, prepared by his wife and his mom excellent home cooking. Highly recommend." Vittorio from Bath, New Hampshire

The motorbike sits patiently at the opening of the narrow trailhead. The precarious entrance into the woods immediately shoots uphill and disappears under the shade of the canopy. The knobblys digs into the dirt as the rider releases the clutch and hammers the throttle. Rider and bike shoot into the forest and ascend the jagged terrain. Suspension bouncing over loose and embedded rocks, the bike never loses traction and maintains forward momentum. Entrenched, the well-used trail has sunken below the surrounding earth, there is no escape from this gnarly minefield. Staying loose, the rider must negotiate a banking turn to the left followed by another to the right and through a narrow passage between the terrestrial wall and a colossal boulder. Maintaining momentum and traction in the dicey vertical gash, rider and bike are delivered to a horizontal plane then on to the next adventure…

Update The Date! Pull out those erasures and pencil in the updated date for our new Singing Hills Jamboree held on September 24-26, 2027!

One of our NEW ONES and still in development...We will head back to the Wildcatters Base Camp for a different event that will fully take advantage of the trails on the 225 acres that is the Singing Hills property.

There will be a friendly recreational tournament on the property to include several different classes: Junior Pitbike, Senior Pitbike, Little Bike (i.e. Honda Monkey, Grom, etc.), Dual Sport, and ADV. But we will also include open riding sessions throughout the weekend! This one is for people who always wanted to try trail racing but never did or if you are looking for something different in an ADV and Dual Sport event.

The History of the Jamboree...If you've been around for a while you might recognize that name, but how far back do you go? Back in 2022 we ran an event called the Bald Eagle Jamboree ADV Rally. It was a super fun event to run but due to many factors it was the one and only event in that Bald Eagle State Forest area (we are developing a NEW Bald Eagle Bash Guided ADV Tour for 2027!).

That same year we ran a small-scale event near Marienville in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) but called it by a different name. In 2023 I decided to make the ANF our new home for the Jamboree and had a ton of fun over the next few years. For many reasons we decided to scrap the Allegheny Jamboree and switched over to our first annual Wildcatters ADV Rally near Titusville, PA this year.

After the success of the Wildcatters and the desire to use that PHENOMENAL property for another event I decided to recycle that old Jamboree name and created The new Singing Hills Jamboree. I am calling it a "tournament" but the main thing is to have fun and give people the opportunity to try something different...whether that is a mock race, riding your Honda Grom (or similar) in a way unintended by the engineers, or if you want to challenge your off road skills on an ADV bike. The format for this one is still being developed but we have a year to figure it out!

Only 2 Group ADV & Dual Sport Riding Clinics left this year!

A LADIES ONLY Level 1 Riding Clinic with special guest co-coach Melissa Fike this autumn! We will run the Clinic in Fools Ride Territory near Richmond, Ohio on September 26-27.

Level 2 Intermediate+ Clinic on September 19-20!

The Level 1 course is designed for Beginner to Intermediate, Clutch Capable riders that are looking to gain experience and basic skills for dirt and gravel roads. Clutch Capable refers to the rider having experience and comfort with basic operation of the motorcycle. This course is ideal for returning riders, street riders new to ADV, riders looking to brush up on skills & techniques, riders looking for new or different techniques, and riders looking for real-time feedback & coaching. The Level 1 Clinic is not “off road” training but uses basic off road techniques to help improve overall non-pavement riding and build confidence within the rider and in their bike.

The Level 2 course is designed to be more off-road leaning and aggressive gravel experience compared to the Level 1. Where our Level 1 is intended to break down individual theories and techniques the Level 2 is designed to combine multiple things and introduce new, more difficult skills. The terrain and obstacles become more aggressive and there are more off road areas utilized compared to our Level 1 during the second session. We expect riders to have the fundamentals and similar experience level from our Level 1 Clinic when participating in the Level 2. Our goal is for riders to get the most out of our Clinic, enjoy the experience, and gain skills so it is imperative that riders have the appropriate familiarity before signing up for our Level 2.

Reach out to [email protected] to set up a Private Clinic!

We also offer private 1 and 2 day Clinics, 1 person or 1 person with 1-2 buddies. Private Clinics have a similar set up as the group clinics but we can work on things specifically desired. We can do a Level 1, Level 2, combination of the two, or a more advanced session depending on what the rider(s) wants to cover.
