Today was one of those fun trips with good customers that enjoyed the day in the water. Jeff Martin had been out with me before and this time he brought a friend Lonnie Gravitt with him. Lonnie got his first look at Livescope and it didn’t take but a few minutes for him to understand what was happening under the water. We only needed to hit a couple of brush piles to boat a nice mess of crappie. Lonnie also caught a nice size bass and the largest crappie. So glad to see the bite improve and the crappie starting to bunch up and begin their fall feeding spree. I have good dates open for crappie and bass trips and with the days getting shorter the fishing will be much better. Now we just need a good rain and some cooler temperatures.

Welcomed buddy, Sam Trinca back by “letting” him catch the big one of the day. Problem is that it was the only good bass of the morning. Still a tough bite out there but it has to improve soon.

September 2026 kicked off with a BANG! I always look forward to Opening Day and it signifies the start of another great hunting season. It reminds me of the joke, “little Johnny’s teacher asked him if he could name the four seasons of the year? Yes mam, let’s see there’s Dove season, squirrel season, deer season and then duck season.” The 2026 Dove season opened Tuesday and I hunted with friends, Mike and John Perkins and we all got our limits. The weather was hot and the birds were best close to watering holes. I have hunted opening day for close to 70 years now and some have been in over 100° temperature days but every one is memorable and marks the beginning of my favorite time of the year.
Let the rains begin and temperatures cool off and enjoy the the first season of the year. The fish will be biting better and it is a great time to be outdoors.

Joe Ferguson and his friend Bob Loretelli from CA joined me this morning. We caught a couple of nice under the slot bass in shallow grass early and a half dozen baby bass and then tried a few deep structure holes. Joe caught a couple of good ones and Bob had a nice one get off. We need some rain and cooler weather and then the bite should pick up.

Today the weather was still hot but the fishing was not. After a fairly good morning bite yesterday we did not get much action this morning on the shallows. Blake Snow and Travis Hengst joined me this morning and we did our best to locate some big bass. Travis caught a 7.35 and Blake had one around 4 and then tricked a 7 lber. We only boated a total of 6 bass and Blake and Travis fished hard and never gave up. They both have fished Fork numerous times so they knew the late summer bite can be fickle. We finally thought in the towel at 2 pm when the temps hit 104°. I am ready for a cool front and an end to this summer heat.

Finally, we get a cool cloudy morning with a few rain drops. Even the bass felt better and decided to play.

Sure would like to get in on a good opening day DOVE shoot on Sept. 1st. Does anyone know of a good dove field that may have room for one or two more hunters? Will trade a fishing trip for an invite to shoot doves.

We launched at daylight this morning looking for some shallow bass. The grass was full of bait but didn’t find many bass willing to bite. Picked up a crappie jig and caught a few for lunch. Nothing like fresh fried fish!

Some days you just get lucky and pick the best fishing spot and lure and the bass are ready to bite. This morning Rowdy Starnes and Sam Trinca joined me for an early morning start but although we launched the boat before daybreak, there was already a boat on our favorite spot. We pulled up on spot number two and the bite was fast and furious. We figured out the best bait and retrieve and then it was fast and furious action all morning long. We ended up boating 112 bass by 11:00 a.m. and left them biting. No big ones today but the fast action made up for size. I had one last “vision” and made a lure change and we caught bass on almost every cast. Just made a large Tackle Warehouse order! Who wants to learn the secret?
