5 Ways Successful Athletes Manage Their Self-Talk

Have Awareness of Their Internal Dialogue – Successful athletes pay attention to what they say to themselves. They recognize when their thoughts become negative, critical, or unproductive. This self-awareness allows them to catch performance-detracting thoughts before those thoughts affect confidence and performance.

Take a Practical Approach – Successful athletes don’t pretend they will never have negative thoughts. They understand that they will experience a wide range of thoughts and that it is their responsibility to take control of the content of their conscious thoughts.

Challenge Negative Thoughts – Elite athletes don’t unquestioningly accept any thought that pops into their mind. Instead, they examine and challenge unproductive thoughts. For example, when the thought, “I can’t win,” appears, they ask, “What evidence is there to support this thought?” IS it 100 percent true that I can’t win?”

Let Go of What They Cannot Control – Successful athletes don’t waste their time thinking about past mistakes, previous losses, competition conditions, or other things outside their direct control. Instead, they ask themselves, “What can I control right now that will allow me to compete at my highest level?”

Deliberately Practice Positive Self-Talk – Elite performers understand that productive self-talk is a mental skill that must be trained. They rehearse empowering phrases (“You got this,” “Get after it”) or instructional self-talk (“Quick feet,” “Follow through”). This focused training allows positive, confident thoughts to become automatic under pressure.
