One of the most important things I learned from Professor Remy Presas wasn't a technique.

I learned that I was a better Tim Hartman than a Remy Presas.

When we find a great teacher, it's natural to imitate them. We copy how they move, how they teach, even how they explain things.

But eventually, you have to find yourself.

Professor gave me an incredible foundation. He became my teacher, mentor, friend, and someone I considered an adopted father. I would never want to erase his influence from what I do.

But my responsibility wasn't to become another Remy Presas.

It was to take what he gave me, understand it, preserve what needed preserving, continue learning, and develop into the best version of me.

That's also how I approach developing instructors today.

I don't need another Tim Hartman.

If you train with me, I don't want to erase your identity, your previous training, your personality, or the things that make you an effective teacher.

I want to help you become better at what you do.

A great mentor shouldn't create copies.

A great mentor should help create originals.

That may be one of the greatest lessons Professor ever taught me, even if he never actually said the words.

This weekend I'm heading to Diamond Martial Arts to help celebrate their anniversary and spend the day doing what brought all of us together in the first place — martial arts.

I'm honored to be teaching alongside Sean Kelly and Jason Arnold as part of today's celebration.

Anniversary events like this are about much more than another year on the calendar. They represent the students who walked through the doors, the instructors who invested their time, the friendships that developed, and the community that grew around the school.

Congratulations to everyone at Diamond Martial Arts on reaching this milestone.
