William Shumway and his family were in the building recently to visit the desk that his father, Arthur Shumway, sat at while working as a telegrapher for the NY Central Railroad. Arthur worked at many stations along the line - Wellsboro, Stokesdale, Tiadaughton, Cammal, and into NY state at Corning Yards, Beaver Dam, and Himrod. He retired from the railroad and had a meat processing plant which much of his grandchildren remember him for. We feel honored to be a place to house such history.
William shared stories about his mom and dad and siblings taking a trip to New York City via the train because his dad received passes. He also spoke of his dad's time at the Tiadaughton station and how that work required him to park at the top of the road and walk in sometimes in the middle of the night in the middle of the winter! If you know the Pine Creek Rail Trail and the Tiadaughton area, can you imagine?! We know you can.
