Years ago, I implemented a habit of taking off from work on my birthday and for our wedding anniversary.

There typically arenโ€™t any big, special plans. No trips or packed itineraries.

Itโ€™s simply an opportunity to step away and give focus and gratitude for the life I get to live and the marriage weโ€™ve built.

There will always be another email, meeting, deadlineโ€ฆ another thing that feels like it needs our attention right now.

However life is happening right alongside all of it.

Today, my husband and I celebrate 20 years of marriage. And while we donโ€™t have some grand adventure planned, I canโ€™t think of anywhere more important for me to be than right here, fully present for it.

I love my work. I care deeply about what I do. And Iโ€™ve also learned that stepping away from it doesnโ€™t make me less committed.

It reminds me what Iโ€™m working so hard for in the first place.

Take the day.
Celebrate the birthday.
Honor the anniversary.
Make the memory.

We work hard for a life we love. Donโ€™t forget to take time to live it. โค๏ธ

Itโ€™s funny how laser-focused we can become on the insignificant details. We really beat ourselves up over some silly stuff.

But when we shift our lens and see ourselves the way others do, whelpโ€ฆ thereโ€™s often a whole lot of beauty weโ€™ve been overlooking.

I needed that reminder todayโ€ฆ dog hair and all!

Weโ€™re SOOOOO close!!!!!

08/22/2026

I cut cornersโ€ฆ and literally got burned. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

And while my skin may be the one paying the price, it was a pretty good reminder about leadership.

When weโ€™re moving fast, itโ€™s tempting to skip the prep, take the shortcut, or tell ourselves, โ€œItโ€™ll be fine.โ€

Sometimes it is.

And sometimesโ€ฆ we get burned.

Preparation may take a little more time upfront, but whether youโ€™re ironing a dress or leading people, it can save you a whole lot of pain later. ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ’™ You can be successful AND still feel stuck.

๐Ÿ’™ You can be a great leader AND question yourself.

๐Ÿ’™ You can have a really good life AND know something needs to change.

Thatโ€™s actually where a lot of my coaching conversations begin. Not with, โ€œEverything is falling apart.โ€

More likeโ€ฆ

๐Ÿค โ€œI know Iโ€™m capable of more, but I donโ€™t know whatโ€™s getting in my way.โ€

๐Ÿค โ€œI keep having the same problem over and over.โ€

๐Ÿค โ€œI know what I should do. Iโ€™m just not doing it.โ€

๐Ÿค โ€œIโ€™ve accomplished a lotโ€ฆ so why donโ€™t I feel the way I thought I would?โ€

Thatโ€™s the work I am passionate about.

Creating space to slow down, get curious, uncover whatโ€™s really going on underneath the surface, and make intentional choices about what comes next.

No fixing you.
No telling you how to live your life.
No one-size-fits-all formula.

Just really good questions, honest conversations, new perspectives, and some tools to help you get from where you are to where you want to be.

And laughter, plenty of laughter! If we canโ€™t laugh at life, whatโ€™s the point?!

If youโ€™ve been thinking, โ€œMaybe I need someone in my corner for this next chapterโ€ฆโ€

Maybe you do. ๐Ÿ’™

Iโ€™m currently welcoming new 1:1 coaching clients.

Send me a DM and letโ€™s talk. No pressure. Just a conversation.

Confession: Iโ€™m not very good at eating. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I know. Weird sentence.

Aside from being allergic to everything, I rarely notice that Iโ€™m actually hungry.

But Iโ€™m actually on a journey right now to eat moreโ€ฆ more consistently and before I suddenly realize itโ€™s 3pm and Iโ€™ve been relying on meeting agendas and adrenaline to get by.

As leaders, I know Iโ€™m not alone.

We jump from meeting to meeting. Someone needs us. An email feels urgent. A problem pops up. And lunch? Lunch gets pushed to โ€œin a few minutes.โ€

Except sometimes that few minutes becomes a few hours.

We talk a lot about taking care of our teams, managing our energy and showing up as our best selves.

We canโ€™t forget, weโ€™re humans leading humans.

And humans need to eat!!

So lately, part of taking better care of myself has been ridiculously simple. Stop. Sit down. Eat the lunch.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Not when everything is finished.
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Not when everyone else is taken care of.
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Not when I finally have โ€œtime.โ€

Because there will always be one more thing.

Turns out leadership development sometimes looks a lot less like a courseโ€ฆ and a lot more like eating your chicken before 3pm. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Anyone else terrible at remembering to eat?

Todayโ€™s leadership lesson is brought to you by the approximately 742 bug bites currently covering my ankles and feet. ๐ŸฆŸ

Iโ€™m trying to get stuff done, but my lower limbs are screaming.

And thatโ€™s how life often works.

Sometimes we assume we have a focus problem when we actually have something else demanding our attention.

An unresolved conversation.
A decision we keep avoiding.
Something at home.
Something at work.
Or, apparently, 742 bug bites.

You can keep telling yourself to โ€œjust focusโ€โ€ฆ but sometimes the better question isโ€ฆ

What keeps stealing my attention, and what do I need to do about it?

Now excuse me while I sort out what on earth to do about these bites!!

Ever have one of those days when you ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ what you need to doโ€ฆ but your brain just wonโ€™t cooperate?

That can be whatโ€™s called an ๐—ฒ๐˜…

Think of executive functioning as your brainโ€™s management system. It helps you:

โœจGet started on a task
โœจPrioritize what needs to happen first
โœจOrganize your thoughts and actions
โœจManage your time
โœจStay focused or shift focus when needed
โœจRemember what you were just about to do
โœจRegulate emotions and impulses
โœจFollow something through to completion

You can be incredibly capable, motivated and intelligent and still struggle to translate ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ into ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ.

Stress, overwhelm, lack of sleep, burnout and cognitive overload can all make these skills harder to access. This is something many people experience, especially when life demands are high or cognitive load is heavy.

๐Ÿ’ก ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜€: When your brain feels stuck, make the next step ridiculously small. I mean ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฎ ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ฎ!!

Often times we donโ€™t need more motivation. Leadership confessionโ€ฆ

Today I had a meeting withโ€ฆ my car. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ˜‚

No phone calls.
No emails.
No podcasts.
No โ€œIโ€™ll just answer one more Teams message.โ€

I just sat there for a few minutes.

Itโ€™s funny how so many of us leaders wear โ€œpowering throughโ€ like itโ€™s a badge of honor. We skip lunch. We work late. We answer emails at the Thanksgiving dinner table. We convince ourselves that taking 10 minutes away somehow makes us less productive.

Neuroscience says the opposite.

Your brain wasnโ€™t designed to stay in focused mode all day. When you step away, even for a few minutes, you give your brainโ€™s default mode network a chance to kick in. Thatโ€™s when it starts connecting ideas, solving problems in the background, consolidating memories, and calming your stress response.

Translation? Sometimes the most productive thing you can doโ€ฆ is absolutely nothing.

Ironically, I didnโ€™t even realize how much I needed the pause until I took it.

So if you happen to see a leader sitting alone in their car this week, donโ€™t assume theyโ€™re hiding from work.

They might just be having a highly strategic meeting with their brain. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿง
