Same problem. Opposite decisions.
Pulisic forces power when the moment needed feel.
Freese hesitates when the moment demanded urgency.
That is football IQ.
Not athleticism. Not effort. Not technique in isolation.
At the elite international level, the separator is game-state awareness, danger recognition, and decision-making under pressure.
When to create.
When to simplify.
When to take risk.
When to kill risk.
The best players and goalkeepers are not just faster physically.
They are faster mentally.
That is the difference.
That is football IQ.

Brazil’s missed penalty yesterday exposed a bigger trend.
Too many takers are trying to wait out the goalkeeper.
Slow down.
Read the movement.
Pass it the other way.
Realistically, maybe 10% of players can execute the rhythm, power, and placement precisely. Yet 60-70% of players are taking this approach.
From a goalkeeper’s perspective, the hardest penalty is not always the one that fools you - It’s the one you read correctly…arrive for…and still can’t reach.
Power cuts reaction time.
Placement stretches reach.
Commitment maintains power in the kick.
Deception is a weapon, but it should be an exception.
For most power should be the base layer.

Grateful to attend an excellent evening at the Consulate of France in New York centered on French football methodology and player development, and the American soccer landscape.
The biggest takeaway was clear:
Player development is not just about producing talent. It is about creating environments where players learn to think, adapt, solve problems, and understand the game.
That perspective matters deeply in the American youth development system, where physical traits can often be the first things rewarded: speed, size, strength, explosiveness, and effort.
Those qualities matter. But they are not enough.
The next layer is football intelligence: awareness, timing, positioning, decision-making, communication, and adaptability.
For goalkeepers, this is especially important.
A goalkeeper’s development cannot only be measured by saves. The best goalkeepers read danger earlier, organize the game, manage space, and make better decisions before the shot ever happens.
That is the purpose behind GK Visuals.
We help young goalkeepers use match video to better understand the game — not just review clips, but build decision-making, awareness, and football intelligence.
Training builds technique.
Matches build experience.
Video reflection builds understanding.

Story of our lives.
Across youth soccer in America, poor field conditions have long been an obstacle to the game. Adaptability is part of football, but too often players are adapting to surfaces that increase injury risk and limit development.
Having coached goalkeepers across Jersey for years, I’ve seen how poor field conditions can hold back goalkeeper development. Young keepers become less willing to dive, attack crosses, and fully commit to techniques when they don’t trust the surface beneath them.
Turf has been a major improvement in areas where natural grass fields are simply unplayable, but turf isn’t a perfect solution either, particularly for younger players. The debate around injury risk and player welfare is well documented, and the research is available for anyone interested in exploring it further.
While I’m happy to hear our USA Soccer Men's National Team players say that quality grass surfaces helped them perform on the world’s biggest stage, for me it raises a bigger question:
Why does it take a World Cup for footballers in America to consistently play on pitches worthy of the game?

Saw a standard Snickers display and immediately thought:
This aisle needed a 1994 World Cup USA throwback.
Tab Ramos.
A real Snickers campaign.
The World Cup coming back to America.
The archive was right there. The timing is right now.
A little retail nostalgia.
A little soccer history.
A little “you get a little nuts when you’re hungry.”
There’s a hunger inside.

When the Glove Changed the Save.
A goalkeeper-glove spec concept inspired by one detail from the 1970 Final:
The keepers were still playing bare-handed!
In one defining sequence with the score 2-1, Italy’s GK Enrico Albertosi commits feet-first as Brazil attacks inside the box.
Not because he lacked courage.
Because without modern gloves, the risk profile was different.
No modern latex.
No finger protection.
No grip advantage.
The gear was different, so the technique had to be different.
This concept reimagines the moment through the evolution of the goalkeeper glove: from survival to smother.
Gloves didn’t just protect the keeper, they changed the save itself.
Survival to smother: rewriting the save.
