A Keystone Classic Comes to the ECFA: The Reading Raptors Join the East Coast Football Association

The Reading Raptors Minor League Football brings two decades of dynasty football to the ECFA for the Spring 2027 season.

Open on a cold Pennsylvania field, 2004. A first-year team called the Reading Raptors takes the ball for the first time in the Empire League and gets knocked flat — a 1–9 season, the kind that ends most stories before they start.

It didn't end this one. It started it.

Because what followed over the next two decades wasn't a losing record. It was a dynasty — one built, broken, rebuilt, and resurrected more times than most franchises get to exist at all. And this spring, that story finds a new home. **The Reading Raptors are joining the East Coast Football Association for the Spring 2027 season, and the Keystone State's most decorated minor league organization is bringing every chapter of its history with it.

From Ashes to Arena

The turnaround came fast. By 2005, the Raptors had jumped to the Garden State circuit and gone 10–2,finishing the year ranked #3 in the country — behind only the Phish and the Mariners. A team that couldn't win a game one season was suddenly a national contender the next.

Then, as it so often does, life got in the way. From 2006 to 2015 the roster scattered into other programs. Three knee surgeries pulled the organization's leader off the field. Kids' seasons, work, the ordinary weight of adulthood — all of it stacked up. The Raptors name went quiet, though the football never fully stopped; there was always a sideline to help on, always a hand to lend.

In 2015, they came back. The Raptors name was resurrected, and the organization stepped into the MIFL to play arena football. What happened next belongs in a highlight reel that doesn't quit.

The Dynasty years

From 2015 to 2021, the Reading Raptors went 71–3.

Read that again. Seventy-one wins. Three losses. Six straight league championships across the MIFL, MIAFL, and AIFL. A win streak that stretched past 60 games— long enough that it took the #1-ranked Charlotte team in the country to finally end it.

And here's the line that separates the Raptors from every other minor league program in the conversation: Reading became **the only amateur team ever to crack the professional arena Top 20, climbing all the way to #7,. Amateurs, on a list built for pros.

They weren't content to run one team, either. In 2018 the organization fielded an 11-man squad as the Berks County Outlaws — a blend of the Red City Outlaws and Raptors talent — that went 6–4 and reached the postseason. Then in 2021, the Raptors did something almost no organization attempts: they ran two full teams at once. An 8-man Berks County Raptors club played alongside the Reading team, went 9–1, and won its league championship — the same season Reading won its own.Two rosters. Two leagues. Two titles. One organization.

Handing off the torch

Life came calling again from 2022 to 2025, and the leader stepped back — but the football didn't stop. Partner Brandon Gruber kept the Berks County program alive and competing through every one of those seasons, holding the line so there'd be something to come back to.

There was. In 2025 the Reading team was resurrected once more — this time reborn as an 11-man program** in the NEAFL. Rebuilding an 11-man roster out of a championship arena identity is one of the hardest transitions in the sport, and the Raptors went 8–10 across 2025 and 2026 while doing it — and made the playoffs both years anyway.

That postseason streak is no accident. **In every single season the Reading franchise has taken the field, it has reached the playoffs — every year but its very first, back in 2004.

More than a scoreboard

Ask what the Raptors actually build, and the record is only half the answer.

The same coaching staff has been in place since 2015 — every one of them having played and coached professional football. That continuity has turned Reading into a genuine pipeline. Raptors alumni have signed professional contracts in the American arena leagues, in Europe, and in Mexico, while others have moved on to college rosters. This past season, starting defensive end Brandon Fossearned an offer to play Division II football at Shippensburg University, where he's now suiting up as a freshman.

Off the field, the organization operates like a program several levels up — a professional approach to social media and full game broadcasts for every home contest. All of it in service of a single mission: to uplift minor league football and leave it better than they found it.

The next chapter

That mission is exactly why this move fits. The East Coast Football Association is building something regional, professional, and lasting — and in the Reading Raptors, it gains a founding-caliber name with championship pedigree, a proven front office, and a decade-long track record of developing players who go on to bigger stages.

Pennsylvania is the Keystone State — the block that holds the arch together. Come Spring 2027, the Reading Raptors take their place in the ECFA, and a Keystone classic gets its next act.
