Coach Hunter Spielman

Walleye Lacrosse

For Coach Hunter, coaching became a way to remain connected to the sport after finishing his college playing career.

Then, one lunch conversation changed everything.

The idea for Walleye Lacrosse came together almost on the spot. Within a week, they had chosen a name and colors, designed a logo, and filled a roster.

The rest is history.

As a player, one of Coach Hunter’s favorite memories was being part of the first team in Walled Lake Central history to win the City Cup against Walled Lake Northern on Northern’s own field.

But as a coach, some of the most meaningful moments are much quieter.

Receiving handwritten notes from players at the end of the spring season has shown him just how meaningful a coach’s impact can be.

🐟 Fun fact: Walleye Lacrosse began as a spur-of-the-moment idea over lunch.

For Coach Mark, coaching has always been about helping others develop the same passion he has for lacrosse.

He loved the game and understood how much influence the right coach could have in fostering that love in someone else.

That realization became more than a passing thought.

It became 22 years of coaching.

For more than two decades, Coach Mark has continued sharing his knowledge, enthusiasm, and appreciation for the game with the players around him.

A coach’s impact is not always measured by one particular memory.

Sometimes, it is measured by the passion that continues being passed from one player to the next, year after year.

🎸 Fun fact: Coach Mark was once in a band that opened for Aretha Franklin at Comerica Park.

Walled Lake Gladiators 7/8 Goalie Coach

For Coach CJ, the desire to coach came from someone who had already made an impact on him.

After being inspired by his own goalie coach, Coach Aaron Auge, CJ wanted to give back to the lacrosse community that had given him so much.

During his senior year of high school, while playing for Farmington United Boys Lacrosse, Coach CJ reached out to help coach goalies in a neighboring school district, joining the Walled Lake Gladiators youth program as the volunteer goalie coach for the 7/8 team.

It was his first coaching experience, and he stepped into the role while still finishing his own high school playing career. He volunteered his time simply because of his love for lacrosse, the goalie position, and the opportunity to help younger players grow.

Now committed to Alma College, Coach CJ will continue his lacrosse journey there this fall while already beginning to pass what he has learned on to the next generation of goalies.

His favorite playing memory came at the end of his sophomore year.

After becoming the emergency goalie, he earned his first win in net as Farmington United defeated Fenton 9–6.

🥍 Fun fact: Before becoming a goalie, Coach CJ played faceoff for two years.

From Coach Auge to Coach CJ and now to the next group of goalies — this is how impact continues to travel through the game.
