Coach Misty’s Question of the Week:

What if your first 5K wasn’t about how fast you finished—but how much confidence you gained along the way?

Almost every beginner who tells me they want to complete a 5K follows it with the same concern:

“But I’m slow.”

So, let’s take pace off the table for a moment. Forget the clock, the numbers, and what everyone else is doing.

Instead, ask yourself this:

What would crossing that finish line prove to you?

Maybe it would prove that you can keep a promise to yourself for six weeks.

Maybe it would prove that you’re capable of doing something that once scared you.

Maybe it would show your children what courage, commitment, and perseverance look like.

Or maybe it would simply remind you that you are stronger than the voice that keeps telling you, “I can’t.”

Your pace does not determine whether you belong at the starting line.

Walking counts.
Run-walking counts.
Starting counts.
Finishing proud counts.

Your first 5K isn’t about proving how fast you are. It’s about discovering what you’re capable of.

So, what would crossing that finish line prove to you?

Tell me in the comments or send me a private message. I would truly love to hear your answer.

From Julie on Google:

“Misty is an amazing coach! She is so helpful with building a solid schedule and always available for questions! Thank you, Coach Misty!”

And honestly, the questions are one of my favorite parts of coaching.

What should I eat before a long run?
Is this soreness normal?
Can I move Thursday’s workout to Friday?
Am I running too fast on my easy days?

A training plan on paper can give you the workouts—but it can’t answer those questions, adjust when life happens, or help you understand the *why* behind what you’re doing.

That’s where having a coach makes a difference.

Thank you, Julie! I’m looking forward to many more miles together. ❤️

If you’re training for something this fall and you’re tired of guessing your way through it, send me a message. Questions are always welcome.

Always in your corner,
Coach Misty

And the WINNER of a New Garmin Running Watch is...... TAMMY!

Here is how you win a Garmin: you show up, and then you tell the world about it. Over six weeks, Tammy shared her fitness journey. Weight day. Intervals done. First group run done. A run/walk at 7:30 in the morning because it was already hot. A late run in the dark with the softball field lights on. This is not only dedication, but it's inspiration! Thank you, Tammy, for sharing your journey with us in the Miles with Misty Beginner 5K Running Program!

To everyone in the Summer Beginner 5K group: thank you for every tag, every photo, and every sweaty selfie. You made this program feel like a team.

Erin once told me something I've repeated to a lot of runners since: "Motivation isn't always there, but discipline is."

This is Erin after the Soldier Field 10 Mile a year and a half ago. That fall, she ran her first marathon in Chicago, a race that had been on her list for fifteen years. She got in through the lottery and then did the work.

What I want you to notice isn't the medal. It's her mindset. She has never regretted a run, but she has regretted skipping one. She runs to prove she can do hard things and to show her kids what discipline looks like.

Erin and her family camp spring through fall, so her training had to fit around real life. We built it that way.

Every runner I've coached brings a story worth remembering, and Erin's still inspires me.

If your running has to fit around a full life too, send me a message and tell me what you're training for.

They did it!

This morning they pinned on a bib for the Popcorn Panic in Valparaiso and ran, walked, and run-walked their way to the finish line.

Look at these faces. That is what six weeks of showing up looks like. Early alarms. Hot mornings. Saturdays they could have slept in.

To my Summer Beginner 5K & 5 Mile team: I am so proud of every single one of you. Walkers, run-walkers, runners, and first-timers. You kept a promise to yourself for six weeks, and today you found out what that promise was worth.

This was your victory lap! Rest today. Eat the popcorn! :) Tell somebody what you did!

And if you already know you want to keep going, Grateful Strides, my fall beginner program, is open for sign-ups at mileswithmisty.com. We start October 12 and finish at the Valpo Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. There is a place for you here.

It’s race morning for my Summer Beginner 5K group!

Six weeks ago, some of you weren’t sure you could run for 30 seconds. Today, you’re pinning on a race bib and preparing to take on the Popcorn Panic 5K and 5 mile race in Valparaiso.

No matter what the clock says when you cross the finish line, you have already accomplished something incredible. You kept showing up all summer—through the heat, the challenging workouts, and the mornings when you didn’t feel like getting out there. That commitment is something to be proud of!

Remember these three things today:

1. Start more slowly than you think you should.
2. Smile and thank the volunteers.
3. Whatever you do, remember you already did the hard part! This is your victory lap!

Enjoy the experience and celebrate how far you’ve come.

Let’s do this!

New on Google this week, from Myra:

"This is a great group for all levels. Misty provides a well rounded training routine and support through out the program. I have enjoyed being a part of the run group and plan to continue training with Misty."

"For all levels" is the line I keep coming back to. That's the whole idea behind the group. Walkers, run-walkers, first-timers, and runners chasing a new goal all train together, and every one of them belongs at that starting line.

Thank you, Myra. I can't wait to share many more miles with you.

If you've been wondering whether a group like this would fit you, send me a message and ask. I'd love to hear where you're starting from.

This photo was taken during week one of last year’s beginner group.
Most of them signed up feeling nervous. A few admitted they were only there because a friend convinced them to come!

But here’s the part that matters: they started.

First, they walked. Then, they began run-walking. And one Saturday, they ran farther than they ever thought they could—not alone, but together.

That’s what Grateful Strides is all about. ❤️

Grateful Strides is my beginner-friendly 5K program, kicking off Monday, October 12. It includes six weeks of realistic, supportive training that will lead us all the way to the finish line of the Valpo Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning!

Whether you’re a walker, walk-runner, or runner, there is a place for you here.

🍂 Meet & Greet: Saturday, October 10
👟 First Group Run: Saturday, October 17
🦃 Goal Race: Valpo Turkey Trot
💲 Full Six-Week Program: $50

You don’t have to be a runner to sign up. That’s the whole point.

Registration is now open at mileswithmisty.com. If you’re on the fence, send me a message and tell me what’s holding you back. I’ll give you an honest answer and help you decide if Grateful Strides is right for you.

You may arrive nervous—but you won’t have to take a single step alone.

Nine reviews on Google. Every one of them five stars.

I'm not sharing these to brag. I'm sharing them because of what my runners chose to write about.

Finish times matter. If a time is your goal, it matters to me too, and we chase it together. But for many of my runners, it's about more than a finish time, and that's what they wrote about.

Myra wrote about a group where every level belongs. Tammy wrote about workouts that are fun and easy to fit in at home. Julie wrote about a solid schedule and always having someone to ask. Darren wrote about a coach who has been in his corner since 2015. Ruth wrote about learning more than she ever thought was related to running.

That's the part I care about most. A plan is just a plan. Coaching is having a person who knows your week and helps you follow through. Walkers, run-walkers, beginners, and experienced runners: that's true for every one of you.

To Myra, Tammy, Julie, Darren, and Ruth: thank you. You made my week.

So here's my question for you: what kind of support would help you follow through this season?

Tell me in the comments or send me a private message. I'd truly love to hear your answer.

I am now an official coach partner with .second!

Most runners don’t have a fitness problem at mile 18. They have a fueling problem.

Neversecond is what I reach for in my own training because the math is simple: every C30 gel and drink serving provides 30 grams of carbohydrate. Just as importantly, my stomach tolerates it well on long runs.

What does this mean for the runners I coach? My athletes receive 30% off everything at never2.com for as long as they train with me, along with fueling plans built around products I have actually used and trust. Every one of my athletes received their discount code this week.

Fueling is individual. Always try something new on an easy training day first, and race only with what you have practiced.

Training for a fall race and still guessing at your fueling? Send me a message. That conversation is one of the reasons I coach.

Always in your corner,

Coach Misty
