Here is the truth about one handed passes.. every player should be working on them. Yes you should be able to and prioritize two handed passes. But one handed passes should not be looked at as “flashy” or lazy. They are extremely effective and sometimes necessary to throw good on time/on target passes.

One handed passes can be quicker from the point of gather to the pass.

One handed passes can save you from turnovers by not “committing” to passes if teammates aren’t open.

You can protect the ball with your off hand while throwing one handed passes.

I’m not saying don’t throw 2 handed passes. I’m saying start working on 1 handed passes as well.

Coaches love players who finish off two feet. It offers more control, more balance and more options when finishing in the paint.

Steal this 2 foot finishing series ⬇️

✅ 2 foot floater
✅ Step thru
✅ Kobe pivot (reverse pivot)
✅ Behind the back - 2 foot floater
✅ Behind the back - step thru
✅ Behind the back - Kobe pivot

Use the retreat dribble to chance PACE and punish a bad defender 🏀

Using the retreat dribble when you try to drive the ball and get cut off is a great way to create separation off the dribble and not make a bad decision. Often times players will either force a bad shot, try to throw a risky pass or pull their dribble if they don’t have the initial drive to the rim. The retreat dribble allows you to keep your dribble alive.

Often times defenders will come out of their stance and relax when you begin to retreat because they think they did their job, that is the best time to attack. Once you see your defender stand up, immediately drive the ball and attack. You can achieve this by changing your PACE - Slow retreat back, quick explosion forward.

Teach players, not robots 🏀

Explaining in detail different situations when working on your game separates good from great. Anyone can just go through drills. But to fully understand concepts, footwork and skills you have to learn and understand every detail.

This is a small example of the teaching phase. You rep different footwork and stack skills with no defense to get players visualizing and understanding as much as they can without a live defender. Once they begin to put the pieces together, then you add the live defender and see the skills come together in live play.

It’s important as coaches we focus on TEACHING and not just saying “do this and do that” that doesn’t create better basketball players, that creates robots.
