Metaphysical Pilates is a holistic practice for achieving a more conscious mind and healthy body.
Most people who walk into a Pilates studio have never heard the names Kathleen Stanford Grant or Lo**ta San Miguel.
They should.
Kathleen Stanford Grant was a Black dancer and choreographer personally certified by Joseph Pilates. She taught at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts for decades, bringing the method to generations of dancers who would never have found it otherwise. She passed in 2010, largely uncelebrated by the industry she helped build.
Lo**ta San Miguel is a Puerto Rican woman who holds two direct certifications from Joseph Pilates - 1961 and 1967. She’s the only person alive with that distinction. She is in her 90s. She still teaches.
The Pilates brand has become synonymous with white, thin, and expensive. But the women who carry the most unimpeachable connection to the founder are women of color.
That’s not a footnote to Pilates history.
