🔴⚪⚫ MANCHESTER UNITED DAILY — MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7
Good morning, Tupelo Reds. This one is going to sting.
United were seconds away from leaving Merseyside with three points yesterday before a 96th-minute Ainsley Maitland-Niles screamer rescued a 2–2 draw for Everton. United have now taken four points from their opening three Premier League matches, and the early concern is becoming obvious: Michael Carrick’s team can score, but it has to learn how to protect a lead.
⚽ EVERTON 2–2 UNITED — TWO LEADS, TWO EQUALIZERS
United went ahead shortly after halftime through Bryan Mbeumo, who produced an excellent individual finish.
Everton finally equalized through Tyrique George in the 83rd minute.
Then Benjamin Šeško came off the bench and powered home Bruno Fernandes’ cross in the 88th minute.
It looked like the winner.
Until the 96th minute.
Maitland-Niles, making his Everton debut, unleashed a spectacular long-range strike to make it 2–2 with essentially the final kick.
Carrick summed it up simply afterward: “It hurts.”
And it should.
United had three points in their hands twice and couldn’t finish the job.
🔥 MBEUMO CONTINUES TO DELIVER
One of the biggest positives remains Bryan Mbeumo.
After scoring against Ipswich, he found the net again yesterday with a superb finish.
United’s revamped attack is beginning to show genuine potential, and The Guardian noted some encouraging flashes among Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford.
There is still work to do on the chemistry, but the individual quality is obvious.
🎯 ŠEŠKO MAKES HIS CASE
Carrick also received exactly what he wanted from Benjamin Šeško.
Introduced from the bench, Šeško gave United a more traditional focal point and headed Bruno’s delivery past Jordan Pickford for what looked like the winner.
That’s an interesting tactical question going forward.
Carrick has been using the mobility and interchange of Cunha, Rashford, Bruno and Mbeumo.
But yesterday demonstrated the alternative:
Put Šeško in the box and give Bruno somebody to find.
United now have different ways to attack teams.
⭐ MAINOO IMPRESSES AGAIN
Another encouraging afternoon for Kobbie Mainoo.
Manchester Evening News rated Mainoo among United’s best performers at Everton, continuing his strong response after returning to the starting XI against Ipswich.
That’s becoming increasingly important because Carlos Baleba will eventually return.
Rather than simply waiting for Baleba to take a midfield position, Mainoo is making Carrick face a legitimate selection decision.
👀 RASHFORD + SHAW PARTNERSHIP IS BACK
One of yesterday’s more encouraging developments happened down United’s left.
Carrick specifically praised the combination between Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw, describing their relationship as dangerous.
We’ve seen that partnership work before.
A confident Rashford attacking ahead of an overlapping Shaw gives United a completely different threat on that side.
🏥 RASHFORD INJURY — EARLY SIGNS ARE ENCOURAGING
There was one concern.
Rashford was substituted after approximately 70 minutes with a physical problem.
Carrick confirmed afterward that Rashford “felt something”, but the initial assessment is that it is nothing major.
That’s important because United have a huge week ahead.
The Champions League returns Thursday, followed by Manchester City on Sunday.
