China has developed an AI-powered flying lifebuoy designed to reach people in the water within seconds and provide flotation support before conventional rescuers arrive.
In Hangzhou, police recently demonstrated an autonomous flying rescue device that can navigate toward a person in distress, land on the water nearby, shut down its propellers, and function as a lifebuoy.
During the August 6 demonstration at Xianghu Lake, the orange rescue ring flew from shore to a person in the water, provided flotation, and then took off again and returned to its starting point.
The technology is designed to shorten the critical first minutes of a water emergency, when getting flotation to a struggling swimmer can make an important difference.
Earlier Chinese designs have also combined a quadcopter with a flotation device. One such system, the TY-3R, has a claimed top speed of 47 km/h and can support up to two adults after landing on the water.
Research has already shown that drones can deliver flotation devices significantly faster than traditional swimming rescues in controlled tests, giving rescuers another way to reach people without immediately sending lifeguards into dangerous water.
The Hangzhou demonstration is still a technology demonstration, so claims about large numbers of real-world lives already saved should be treated cautiously.
But the idea is simple: get flotation to the person first, then let human rescuers take over.
In a drowning emergency, those few minutes can matter.
