Opened in 1924, LSU’s Tiger Stadium received perhaps its most important upgrade all the way back in 1931, when lights were installed to allow for night games. The tradition has stuck ever since.

Through numerous changes and expansions — including dorms built around the stadium as a clever way for Louisiana Governor Huey Long to use federal funds earmarked for student housing to expand the stadium — the one constant was that Tiger Stadium looked (and sounded) best after the sun had found its home in the western sky.

Now over 100 years old and seating more than 100,000 fans, Tiger Stadium is one of the most revered venues in college football.

On this 25th anniversary of 9/11, everyone should know the incredible story of Welles Crowther, a Boston College alum who saved numerous lives in the World Trade Center, but ultimately lost his own.

His memory is honored every year by the Boston College football team, which dons uniforms bearing elements of his trademark red bandana in memory of his sacrifice and heroism.

Tonight, Boston College will take on Rutgers — a school that lost 37 alumni in the attacks on 9/11 — for its annual Red Bandana Game, a fitting matchup between two schools heavily impacted by the events of that tragic day. Rutgers will also be wearing uniforms to remember those who were lost.

As “The Birthplace of College Football” and host to the sport’s first-ever game, Rutgers holds an important spot in American football history.

That first game was played on College Field, located where Rutgers’ College Avenue Gymnasium currently stands. From 1891-1938, the team played its games at nearby Neilson Field, also located on the school’s College Avenue Campus.

In 1938, Rutgers football began play at the newly constructed Rutgers Stadium — a New Deal era project of the Works Progress Administration — located across the Raritan River in Piscataway. It remained the home of Rutgers football through the 1992 season.

After playing the 1993 season at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, Rutgers moved into what is now known as SHI Stadium, located on the same site as the original Rutgers Stadium.
