On May 1 2026 the US Embassy in London issued an official security alert advising American citizens in the United Kingdom to exercise increased caution.
This came after the UK government raised its national terrorism threat level from Substantial to Severe.
Severe means a terrorist attack is now considered highly likely.
WHAT THE US EMBASSY IS TELLING AMERICANS RIGHT NOW:
✅ Stay alert in public places including schools hospitals churches tourist locations and transportation hubs
✅ Vary your travel routes and times — don’t be predictable
✅ Keep a low profile
✅ Stay aware of your surroundings and local events
✅ Review your personal security plans before going out
✅ Report suspicious activity to local authorities immediately
✅ Monitor local news for updates continuously
This is not a Do Not Travel advisory. The US State Department’s overall travel advisory for the UK remains at Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution. But that distinction matters less when the threat level just jumped to Severe.
