Some paintings begin with a blank canvas.
This one began with a memory.

Long before Jaime King put color to paper, her father, Benny King, carried this scene with him.

Benny, a 1974 Cascade graduate, was a sophomore when Bell Buckle School burned. He lived across the railroad tracks and remembers standing in his front yard, watching a place filled with classrooms, friendships and generations of memories disappear into the fire.

For years, one of the lasting images of that day existed in black and white, a newspaper photograph capturing the school engulfed in flames.

Jaime took that photograph, but more importantly, she took her father’s memory of what it felt like to stand there and watch it happen.

Where the old photograph could only give us shades of gray, she imagined the colors he remembered.

The orange and red of the fire.
The darkness of smoke overtaking a familiar place.

And those striking blues rising from the building…Jaime’s artistic interpretation of the chemicals inside the school’s science lab becoming part of the blaze.

Then, in the foreground, she placed a young figure standing quietly before it all.

A son of Bell Buckle.
A witness.
Her dad.

There is something powerful about a daughter painting a moment her father witnessed more than half a century ago. One generation remembered it. Another generation gave that memory color.

And now, another generation will have the opportunity to carry it forward.

This original piece will be offered during the live auction at the Second Annual Sunset Gala on September 26, benefiting the Friends of the Historic Bell Buckle School.

It isn’t simply a painting of a school burning.
It is memory becoming art.
History becoming inheritance.
And proof that even when a building is lost to fire, the stories held inside it don’t have to disappear.

There’s something almost alive about an old car with its hood raised.

From a distance, they look like great mechanical mouths opening toward the street. Almost like Venus flytraps, except what they’re catching isn’t prey.

They’re catching people.
Someone slows down.
Someone points.

Someone who knows engines leans closer. Someone who doesn’t know anything about them asks a question anyway.
And suddenly two strangers have something to talk about.

That may be one of the overlooked gifts of a small town: we keep finding reasons to stop.
The cars are beautiful, but they aren’t really the whole picture. Behind them sits storefronts carrying stories of their own. Somewhere nearby, somebody recognizes somebody. Somebody waves. Somebody stays longer than they planned.

And in the foreground, those hoods remain open.
Maybe that is the symbol.

Open things invite people in.

An open hood invites curiosity.
An open door invites a neighbor.
An open table invites conversation.
An open hand invites service.
An open heart makes room for community.

And faith has always understood something about that posture.

The cars may have been built decades ago, but for a morning they become something more than machines.

They become conversation starters.
Little gathering places made of chrome, steel and memory.

And maybe community is built the same way:
We open something.
Someone comes closer.
A conversation begins.
And strangers leave knowing a little more about each other than they did before.

IT LOOKS LIKE CHAOS. IT’S ACTUALLY CHOREOGRAPHY.

A horse at full stride.
A rider focused on the next target.
A balloon disappearing in an instant.

Cowboy mounted shooting may look like something straight out of the Old West, but behind every run is a partnership between a trained rider and horse.

The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association is bringing that partnership to Cooper Steel Arena at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration Grounds, where competitors navigate designated courses while using .45 caliber fi****ms loaded with specially prepared blank ammunition to burst balloon targets.

No live projectiles are fired at the balloons.

What spectators see in a matter of seconds represents countless hours of horsemanship, conditioning, preparation and riders learning to communicate with their horses while moving through a controlled competition environment.

And perhaps that’s the part worth watching closely.

The speed gets your attention.
The partnership is what makes it possible.

It’s another unique form of horsemanship finding a home at the Celebration Grounds and another opportunity to see just how many different stories can be told from the back of a horse. It’s going on till Sept 19th.

YOU CAN TELL WHEN SERVICE IS PART OF THE CULTURE.

Sometimes you hear it in what an organization says.

Other times, you recognize it in the way its people listen, the questions they ask and the things they are willing to step forward and support.

We felt that at Heritage South Community Credit Union

We walked in to talk about Walking in a Winter Wonderland and walked away inspired by the compassion, care and intentionality around the table. There was a genuine willingness to listen, imagine and ask how they could be part of something meaningful for the community they serve.

Perhaps that shouldn’t be surprising.

I’M NEW HERE.
You’ve seen a little of me this summer.
Now, you’re about to see my fall side.

For four Saturdays, September 19 through October 10 from 3:30–5:30 PM, I’ll fill this little corner of Shelbyville with music again.

I’m Levitt AMP Shelbyville.

I’m new to this community, but I came here hoping to do something that communities have always needed:

Give people a reason to come together.
No ticket. No velvet rope. Just bring a lawn chair, find a spot and stay awhile.

I believe music should sound like the community around it, which is why my stages are intentionally diverse. Different sounds. Different stories. Regional and national musicians getting the opportunity to perform in places their tours might not otherwise take them.

And Shelbyville is now one of those places.

I’m one of only five Levitt AMP communities in Tennessee, made possible through local support and investment from the state with the hope that when people gather around music, they also discover the businesses, restaurants, artists and places surrounding it.

But I’m about more than a concert.

Come move to the music. Let the kids make something at arts and crafts. Meet somebody you didn’t know before. Support The Fly Arts Center and the work of creating an artistic atmosphere that is accessible to everyone.

Most of all, come experience me.
Because I’m still growing.

I’ll learn this community. I’ll get better with time. But for that to happen, I need Bedford County to show up, bring a chair and make this space its own.

Four Saturdays.
Two hours.
Free live music.
One community.

REMEMBRANCE LIVES CLOSE TO HOME.

Across the street from those who answer when our community calls, an American flag was lifted into the Bedford County sky today.

Held between fire ladders and surrounded by the vehicles of our local first responders, it was more than a display.

It was a reminder.

Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, we pause first to remember the lives lost that day… ordinary people who went to work, boarded airplanes, answered emergency calls and began a Tuesday morning never knowing their names would become part of American history.

We remember their families, who have carried that absence for twenty-five years.

We remember the first responders who ran toward danger when every instinct said to run away.

And here at home, we honor the men and women who continue choosing a life of service… firefighters, law enforcement, emergency medical personnel and every first responder willing to answer when someone else is having their worst day.

Community is often spoken about as something we build.

September 11 reminds us that community is also something we protect, serve and carry for one another.

Today, beneath this flag in Bedford County, we remember lives lost far from home while honoring those who continue serving right here in ours.

We remember them. We honor them. We carry their memory forward.

BEFORE IT BECOMES A TRADITION
Years from now, we hope Walking in a Winter Wonderland feels like something Bedford County has always done.

But traditions don’t begin as traditions.
They begin as people.
That’s the heart behind Serve Shelbyville.

We’re inviting leaders to gather their teams, churches, organizations, coworkers and friends to give an evening and help create an experience for the community we call home.

We’re looking for the founding hands of a new Bedford County tradition.

The leader who gathers the office and says, “Let’s do this together.”
The coach who brings a team.
The church that serves beyond its walls.
The civic organization, peer group or friends ready to show up for the community they call home.

Before it becomes a tradition, somebody has to be there to start it.
Maybe that’s us.
