A lot of times I see posts about kids not wanting to practice or things similar to that and then they mention their kid is between 8-12 years old. They mention things like should I push her to practice…

This may be an unpopular opinion but yes, push her to practice. If she has shown signs that she likes softball and expresses interest in being good then YES, PUSH HER.

Work ethic is learned for the most part, maybe some kids are prodigies and may not need to be pushed or made to practice at home. (Love that for them) The majority are not like this.

How do you expect your kid to understand how to hold a standard, work hard, and achieve their goals if you don’t push them at all?

Of course there’s a line where it’s too much and you’ll know, but pushing them and making them practice is a good thing.

I played D1 softball, I pitched and played the field. Many times I was told I wouldn’t play D1, or that I could if I didn’t pitch, or that pitching and playing a position would be too much.

Well I did it, despite the negativity because I was pushed and learned to push myself in the process.

I love love love the game of softball and I can’t picture my life without it but just like everyone else there were days where I just didn’t want to practice.

My dad always said “if you practice only 2 days you are getting worse, 3 days you maintain, and 4 days or more you are getting better.” He made sure I did what I needed to.

Pushing kids is a good thing, not pushing them isn’t helpful because even if they don’t play softball, they should STILL know how to push themselves in life as well.

Remember, very few of them will get to say they are a softball player for life but the skills they learn as a softball player will make them great employees, bosses, mothers, sisters, and friends.

This is the work that IS the shortcut, the answer to the test, and the why behind anyone who is great.

This is what a zoom call night looks like inside The Savage Standard.

These girls are six months in the trenches with me. Calls, conversations, film, accountability, workouts, bullpens, mental work… all of it.

But here’s the thing.

You do NOT need to be inside this mentorship to start raising your standard.

That’s exactly why I created Savage Standard: The Foundation.

I took the first 3 months of the workouts and bullpens we’re doing and made them available to pitchers who are ready to start doing the work.

And I mean WORK.

One thing I talked to the girls about last night was building your mental piggy bank.

Every time you do something hard, you make a deposit.

Every time you finish the workout you wanted to quit. Every time you push through conditioning when your brain is telling you you’re done. Every bullpen you attack when nobody is watching. Every time you prove to yourself that you CAN do hard s**t.

Deposit. Deposit. Deposit.

I did this for YEARS.

And then when I was standing in the circle in the biggest moments of my career, I had something to pull from.

I had proof.

I knew how hard I had worked. I knew what I had already survived. I knew I could do hard s**t because I had done it over and over and over again.

That changed me as a pitcher.

And THAT is what I want young pitchers to start understanding.

You can say you want to be great all day long.

At some point, you have to actually do the work that gives you a chance to become great.

The Foundation is the work.

Three months of workouts. Three months of bullpens. A plan to follow. No guessing what you should be doing.

And every once in a while, I’m going to send Foundation members some of the little nuggets and lessons that come out of these mentorship calls too. Because there’s some GOOD 💩 being talked about in this room.

If you want more access, there’s also a Foundation VIP option where you’ll get 3 Zoom calls with me + 3 video analyses so I can actually put eyes on your pitching and give you feedback as you go.

But either way, I can give you the work.

Whether or not you do it is on you.

And there’s a BIG difference between the girls who want to be great and the girls willing to do what it takes to find out how great they can actually be. 💜

Just because you may not love it doesn’t mean the work doesn’t get done. In fact it probably means you should focus on it MORE.

So many athletes AVOID what they don’t wanna do instead of running at it full force because it’ll make them better.

So here’s the reminder to do the hard stuff.

Did you know that your brain can actually rehearse a movement without your body physically doing it?

There’s a reason elite athletes visualize.

Mental reps aren’t a complete replacement for physical reps, but research has shown that visualization can improve performance and activates some of the same areas involved in actually performing a movement.

Which is why I think we need to start paying a LOT more attention to what’s happening between our ears while we’re training.

Before you throw a pitch, what are you seeing?

What are you telling yourself?

Are you stepping on the rubber thinking, “Don’t miss high”?

“Don’t walk her.”

“Hopefully this is a strike.”

Or are you actually giving your brain and body a direction?

See the pitch. Feel the pitch. Pick your target. Decide what you’re trying to accomplish and then GO do it.

That’s intention.

And it doesn’t stop before the rep.

What are you saying to yourself after a bad one?

Because if every mistake is followed by “I suck today,” “I can’t throw my changeup,” or “Here we go again,” you’re rehearsing THAT too.

A mistake is a mistake. Nobody is trying to throw a ball or hang one over the middle. So acknowledge it, figure out what happened, make an adjustment and move on.

And parents and coaches, this includes us.

The things we repeatedly say to athletes eventually become some of the things they learn to say to themselves.

So maybe instead of, “Why do you keep missing there?”

It’s, “What did you feel?”

“What adjustment do you want to make?”

“What are you trying to do on this next one?”

We’re teaching them how to think through failure instead of panic because of it.

Your thoughts aren’t magically going to make you throw strikes.

You still have to WORK.

But your brain is involved in every single rep you take.

Give it a freaking job.
