Here are the Line Scores and Recaps from Week #2

In a game delayed by little people, manager Mike Fillat tried to negotiate a 6 inning affair so as to not be delayed in getting to the bar. New manager Dreas said he likes to hit and vetoed the suggestion. Due to time constraints, the sixth inning was declared to be the open inning anyway but fabulous umpire Steve Rubino. But I digress. The Dudes were missing some key players but managed to patch together a good win. The goats were short too and had to pick up a big yellow guy. But I digress again. Dudes went 4,3,3,2,4,0. Goats went 1,0,2,5,5,0. The Dudes were led by pitcher Justin going 4/4 and getting some outs on his own in the field. Juan also put up a 4/4. It looked like the Dudes had 5 outfielders out there at times and then we realized Callahan was just everywhere. On the Goats side, Nick was all over the place running down balls as well. The Mudcats and the Sliders slugged it out with the Cats using a seven run open inning to pull out the win. The Cats banged out thirty-eights hits. LCF Matt Riley had the big blast in the 7th, a triple that knocked in three crucial runs. Matt went 6/6 with three doubles, a triple and eight RBI. 2B Scott Stevens, P Dave Sullivan and 3B Peter MacKay each had five hits. RCF John Eveland had five RBI.

The Sliders came into this game expecting a tough matchup however, we started the day with Craig Rowe informing me he had scratched his eye and wouldn't make it that night. Unfortunately, I'm our backup 3rd baseman so I was forced to solicit John Peterson to fill in and he agreed with some reservations since he hadn't played it in years.

As it played out, we made 3 errors in the first to hand the Lawyers a 5 run inning that could have easily been a zero. We, however, failed to answer back and posted a zero of our own. In the 2nd inning, the Cats added another 5 to their score which they earned with solid hitting. We answered with a 5 of our own, only to have our 2nd baseman, Brian Baird go down after knocking in the 5th run and reinjuring his lower back taking him out of the game.

We entered the 3rd, down 10-5, and we managed to hold the Attorneys to 1 run while plating 3 of our own to close the score a bit. Again, in the 4th, we held the Cats to 3 while posting another 5 of our own leaving us chasing 1 run, 14-13.

The 5th and 6th saw both teams total 5 runs to keep it a 1 run game going into the 7th. To their credit, the Mudcats lit us up with 7 runs and held us to only 1. We lost by a final score of 26-19. I blame Craig. He should know better than to scratch his eye when it itches. Hopefully Brian will be Ok but it's up in the air if he will be able to return or not. His back is why he took some seasons off from softball before joining us this season. Hopefully the CBD I gave him will fix it.

If the Disco Gold Gladiators had not been able to come from behind to win after an epic 15 run top of the 7th, at least they would have been able to say their until-then sub-par effort came on a night to remember.

With chatter including "let's hit until the moon is full again" the Gladiators began their trudge to turn the game around as Dave Lazott notched only his second hit of the game. Dan followed with a single. That snowballed into 11 of 12 batters reaching and scoring. The only out came on a sac fly by Karey.

By the time Christian made the second out, the Gladiators had turned a 15-8 deficit into a 17-15 lead. Mario got his second clutch hit of the inning, a 3-run triple, to put the game ultimately out of reach.

Mario also got the win in relief of John, who constantly tested the umpire's height limit, but was unable to stifle the bats of the Back Crackers.

John was the most consistent hitter in the early innings, recording hits in three of his first four at-bats. Rich and Robert also chipped in late in the game - Robert found that it's not always how hard, but where you hit 'em, by collecting three late singles after lining into a frustrating double play to end the top of the third. Rich, who struck out twice leading up to his at bat in the seventh, came through with a pair of clean hits to aid the effort in the big seventh.

By the time the hit barrage came to an end, the Gladiators had put up 15 runs and held a 23-15 lead. The moon was almost full again. The Back Crackers only mustered one run in the bottom as the Gladiators redeemed themselves from a frustrating Week 1 loss.

Goodfellas vs. Night of the Living RED

Look what the wind blew into town… Geoff McKenney and his crew of Goodfellas.

Night of the Living RED squared off against the Goodfellas in what turned into one hell of a game.

The game started with some nice defense from both teams, with each side putting up two runs in the first inning. In the second, RED locked down the D, allowing nothing while slugging five runs of our own. By the end of the third, RED had built an 11–5 lead and things were looking pretty comfortable.

And then… our bats apparently decided they had done enough for the evening.

For the next few innings, RED went a little quiet at the plate, allowing the Goodfellas to slowly crawl back into the game. Going into the top of the seventh, Goodfellas finally grabbed their first lead of the night, putting RED down 17–16.

RED needed two runs to win.

No pressure.

Ray Short started things off with a single to left, immediately getting everyone pumped up. Another single followed, then an out brought us back to the top of the order with Alex Noon, who came through with an RBI single to tie the game and put the winning run on third.

And then yours truly came to the plate.

One out. Runner on third. All I needed to do was hit a deep fly ball and get that winning run home.

Instead, I got into one and drove it over the left fielder’s head for the game-winning hit.

Honestly… that felt pretty damn good.

Alex had a fantastic night, going 5-for-5 with 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Coach went 4-for-4, while Ray Short, Doug Mason, and Bob Cain all went 3-for-4.

New to the league Greg Dawson continues to make himself right at home, collecting two hits and 3 RBIs, including a huge 2-RBI double when we needed it.

Defensively, Jorge made a couple of really nice grabs in left field. He also booted one that I’m pretty sure he’d like to personally erase from the security footage. Fortunately, we won’t hold it against him… much.

The infield was pretty solid, with Bob, Greg, Doug, and myself making the majority of the plays. And as usual, Ray was sharp on the mound, keeping the Goodfellas from getting any free passes.

In the end, it was a crazy, back-and-forth battle that came down to the final inning.

Night of the Living RED wins it, 18–17!

RED has officially started a winning streak.

It’s currently at ONE.

But hey… every dynasty has to start somewhere.

The Mudcats entered the top of the 7th inning trailing by one in a seesaw game. C Kirk Riley, 2B Aaron Gendelman and P Dave Sullivan each drove in a run to give the Cats a slim two run lead entering the bottom of the 7th. The Cats defense had been sharp all right and then delivered when needed most.

The Gladiators pushed across one run and had the tying and winning runs on base with one out. Aaron threw out the next batter at first. 1B Daniel Burford then alertly spun and threw a dart to C Kirk Riley to nail the potential tying run at home for a game ending double play.

SS Kevin Riley paced the Cats offense with a double, triple and a homer. Kevin drove in five runs. RF Bill Sullivan went 4/4. LCF Matt Riley also had four hits. Newcomers Aaron and Ron each had three hits. Kevin recorded two of his trademark back to the plate catches of pop ups to short left field, and Aaron threw out a runner at home from short right field on a relay.

Crack of the bats had more like crack of the wrists and knees as they had some key injuries which made this one of those Warrior games that looks worse than it should have been. The Dudes came out with a 5 after the Cracks scored two to start the season. The Dudes then scored 0,5,3,3,3 for a total of 19. The Cracks scored 1,1,0,3 and then my scorekeeper did not write what they got in the last two innings, so hopefully somebody knows. Bottom line is Dudes won 19-something between 7 and 18. The Dudes were led by Justin on the mound and at the plate going 4-4. Guillermo also was perfect at the plate going 3/3. Only two guys made more than one out on the Dudes and that was a guy who had to fix a flat tire on way to game and a guy who is newly retired and still finding his footing. The Dudes would like to welcome Bill to the league. Bill greeted us with a proper Warrior play as he let the first grounder to him in the outfield go right through his legs. Bill shook the nerves off to pitch a couple innings and go 2/3 at the plate. Mike and Chris both hit grand slams. The Dudes OF caught everything they got to-don't see that every day. The Crack of the bats were fun to play and when healthy will be a team to watch.

Night of the Living RED vs. Sliders

The first game of the new season had Night of the Living RED heading over to take on the Sliders on their turf. And RED wasted no time letting everyone know the bats had made the trip.

Alex Noon got things started with a solo homer down the right-field line. RED followed that up with five more hits and put 5 runs on the board in the top of the 1st. Unfortunately, the Sliders apparently had the same game plan. They answered right back, and over the next five innings RED was only able to add 8 more runs while the Sliders put up 18. Going into the 7th, RED found themselves down 13–23. We managed to scratch one more run across, but that was it. Final score: Sliders 23, RED 14.

The Sliders played a very good game. Their defense was solid, and their hitting was on point all night.

RED had some nice plays of our own and plenty of good hits, but just not quite enough of them when we needed them.

One positive sign: nine RED players had at least two hits. That's a pretty good start, but in this league, two hits out of four aren't always going to get it done. We need more guys turning those 2-for-4 nights into 3-for-4 nights. Apparently, getting older doesn't mean we get to lower the batting standard.

Our two new additions to the league, Craig Dye and Aaron Dragoo, both picked up two hits and made some nice plays in the field. Welcome to the madness, guys.

Jonathan Tappen also collected two hits and nearly had his head taken off by a wicked shot off the bat of Anthony Gallagher. Nothing says "welcome to the new season" quite like watching a softball fly directly at your face.

Our big first baseman, Doug Mason, had two hits and a walk. It's always nice having a big target over at first when you sail one a bit too high and he can sn**ch it out of the sky.

Ray Short did a great job on the mound as usual and had two smoked hits of his own, driving in 3 RBIs. Rick Criss and Clint Short also had two nice hits each, with Rick adding a great catch out in right field.

There were definitely some good things to build on. With a lot of new guys on the team, the first game was a chance to start figuring out positions, personalities, and chemistry. That stuff doesn't happen overnight, but we'll get there.

RED will keep working on the defense, positions and team chemistry as the season moves along. Not a bad effort for a team with a lot of new faces playing its first game together. I know we'll get better.

And credit where credit is due: W***y and the Sliders gave Night of the Living RED a nice little taste of humble pie to start the season.

We'll be looking to make sure it doesn't become a regular part of the diet

The Sliders got off to a bad start giving up a 5 spot in the top of the 1st inning. I blame the poor pitching. However, we proceeded to plate 5 runs of our own to make it a new game. Then the 2nd inning looked like we were going to go downhill as we only gave up 2 runs but failed to get a single hit in the bottom.

The 3rd, however, proved to be the turning point as we only allowed 1 run, and put up 5 of our own to take our first lead of the season, 7-10. All 5 runs were scored with 2 outs as the top of the lineup took charge. 2 singles, a double, a triple and a 2-run home run accounted for the 5 runs. The 4th continued as the 3rd had. Top of the inning saw our only defensive zero of the game as we shut the Red Demons down behind the pitching of Mike Loomis. Just as importantly, we touched home plate 5 more times to take a 15- 8 lead.

The 5th and 6th innings were close, but we won both... 1-3 and 4-5. After the Dead Red Guys scored 4, the game looked way too close all of a sudden at 13-18 so the 5 we scored put it back in the proper perspective... for me. Fortunately, The Night Monsters were only able to score 1 run in the 7th giving us well earned victory.

Defensively the Sliders caught everything they touched. The outfield ran almost everything down. Newcomers Brian Baird and Ryan Berger held down the middle of the infield admirably. Brian made a great play behind 2nd on a hard line drive to his backhand side that he had to leap for. Ryan wasn't throwing anyone out so I suggested he move in a little and he started making the plays. Both of them have been out for a while but you couldn't prove it with this game.

He told me he would be there... and he was.

Nice all-around game Sliders. Next week The Lawyers come to town.
