The difference between supervising a group + truly supporting an individual can come down to something as simple as time + attention.

That’s one reason UNIFIED Esports League maintains a 1:3 coach-to-client ratio. 💙

Imagine a client working through a new activity. Maybe they need the instructions explained differently. Maybe they’re hesitant to ask a teammate to join. Maybe they’re frustrated + need a moment before trying again.

With a smaller group, an IDD-trained coach has more opportunity to recognize what’s happening + respond with compassionate support appropriate to that individual.

Over time, those observations matter.

Our coaches get to know each client’s interests, goals, strengths + areas for growth while helping them explore technology, develop social-emotional skills, build confidence + connect with peers.

Families also receive bi-monthly progress reports that help communicate the progress, goals + experiences being observed within the program.

It’s all part of creating individualized programming where clients can feel seen, supported + encouraged at their own pace.

Every person who walks into a UNIFIED Technology Center brings something different with them—their interests, strengths, personality, passions, challenges + goals. 💙

That’s exactly how it should be.

UNIFIED Esports League serves individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD), ages 8 through adulthood. Some of our clients love gaming. Some are creators. Some want to explore new technology. Some arrive ready to make friends, while others may need more time + support to feel comfortable connecting.

Their needs are just as individual. A client might be working on communication, focus, confidence or navigating social situations. Another might be ready to take on more independence, practice teamwork or discover something they never knew they were good at.

Instead of asking every client to fit into the same experience, our program uses individualized support, a 1:3 coach-to-client ratio + IDD-trained coaching to meet clients where they are.

Sometimes progress looks like learning a new technology skill.

Sometimes it looks like saying, “Hey, want to play?” 💙

For individuals with intellectual disabilities, opportunities for meaningful friendship + social participation matter. A 2026 systematic review examining 40 studies found a 41.7% sample-size-weighted mean prevalence of loneliness among adults with intellectual disabilities. Across the research reviewed, limited friendships, infrequent social contact + smaller or weaker social networks were repeatedly associated with loneliness.

At UNIFIED, we can’t manufacture friendship—and we wouldn’t want to.

What we *can* do is create an environment where connection has room to happen.

Clients arrive to a team environment built around shared interests in gaming + technology. Our IDD-trained coaches can help initiate conversations, model positive interactions, navigate conflict, encourage teamwork + support clients as they practice social skills in real situations.

Over time, those small interactions can become meaningful milestones: remembering someone’s favorite game, inviting a peer to join, celebrating a teammate’s win, recovering from a disagreement or simply feeling comfortable enough to be yourself.

With a 1:3 coach-to-client ratio + individualized goals, our team can pay attention to those moments. Bi-monthly progress reports also help families understand the skills their individual is working toward + the progress being observed within the program.

UNIFIED Esports League is an approved SDRC vendor, allowing eligible SDRC clients to access authorized UESL programming 100% free of charge to the participating individual + their family.

A UNIFIED session has a routine—but no two clients experience that routine exactly the same way. 💙

That balance is intentional.

When clients arrive, the first priority is connection + getting comfortable. From there, they explore gaming + innovative technology, participate in a Healthy Gamer movement break, work alongside coaches on individualized areas of growth + finish by celebrating the day together.

We call that rhythm:
Connect → Explore → Recharge → Grow → Celebrate

Having a familiar session structure creates consistency. Within that structure, our 1:3 coach-to-client ratio helps IDD-trained coaches guide activities according to each client’s interests, abilities + individual goals.

One client might be exploring VR. Another may be learning a new game with a peer. Someone else might be practicing communication, teamwork, sportsmanship or a technology skill.

The schedule provides a framework. The individual helps shape what happens inside it.

That’s an important distinction for families considering a new program—which is why we don’t expect you to understand UNIFIED from a website alone.

The goal wasn’t to make the game easier. It was to give him the support + time he needed to learn. 🎮💙

One of our San Ysidro coaches recently shared a client breakthrough that beautifully captures what individualized support can look like at UNIFIED.

When this client first joined the program, Mario Kart could be challenging. Mechanics like drifting were difficult, and there were moments when frustration meant stepping away from the game.

So his coaches kept encouraging him.

They introduced the drifting mechanics, demonstrated how they worked + gave him opportunities to practice without expecting progress to happen on someone else’s timeline.

Eventually, he got it.

But the story didn’t end there. His coach began seeing him take on harder difficulty levels—and even wanting to help other gamers improve too.

That progression matters.

Our structured sessions + 1:3 coach-to-client ratio help our IDD-trained coaches meet clients where they are, recognize when they need additional support + create opportunities to practice skills through technology they enjoy.

Sometimes the visible accomplishment is learning to drift in Mario Kart. Underneath it can be persistence, confidence, communication + the experience of realizing that something difficult can become possible with practice.

A shared interest can become a friendship. A friendship can become a community. 💙

Jacob loves Yu-Gi-Oh!—and when another UNIFIED client arrived who loved it too, Jacob did something meaningful with that common ground.

He helped organize a recurring Yu-Gi-Oh! Day where players could gather around the table, play together, share their knowledge, + connect over something that already made them happy. 🎴

On the surface, it might look like a card game. We see so much more happening around that table.

We see initiative. Communication. Confidence. Leadership. Welcoming a peer. Sharing knowledge. Practicing sportsmanship. + most importantly, the beginning of real friendship + belonging.

These are the moments our programs are designed to make possible.
