AWARENESS IS THE STARTING POINT OF FREEDOM

You cannot redirect a pattern you refuse to see. Yet many people avoid honest self-examination because they believe awareness will lead to judgment, shame, or another verdict about who they are.

But awareness is not a courtroom. It is a doorway.

There is a profound difference between recognizing a pattern and condemning yourself for having one. Condemnation says, “This proves something is wrong with me.” Awareness says, “Now I can see what has been shaping my choices.”

That distinction changes everything.

A pattern can remain powerful while it stays unnamed. It can influence your reactions, relationships, expectations, and decisions while disguising itself as personality, circumstance, or fate.

The moment you see it clearly, it loses the privilege of operating without your participation. Awareness does not instantly erase the past. It restores your ability to interrupt what the past has been repeating through you.

You do not become free by pretending the pattern never existed. You begin becoming free when you can face it without confusing it with your identity. That is where choice returns. That is where redirection becomes possible. That is where a different future receives its first evidence.

That man on the left was not posing for a comeback story. He was trying to survive. Michelle and I were homeless in San Diego, sleeping in our van and facing each day without knowing when stability would return.

I was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, a husband, and a man who had spent years trying to help others. Yet there I was, confronting the painful distance between the life I had known and the life we were living. Homelessness did not merely test our resources. It challenged our identity.

During that season, I began coaching. Not because I had escaped the struggle, but because Michelle and I decided survival would describe our circumstances, not define who we were. We stopped surrendering our direction to shame, blame, and helplessness. Before the evidence of a better life appeared, we began responding like people capable of building one.

The man on the right did not erase the man on the left. He was built through him. Today, I am a mindset and identity coach, leadership consultant, and published author. The Momentum Mind is not a theory written from a comfortable distance. It carries lessons I had to live before I could write them.

If your current chapter feels like a verdict, hear this clearly: circumstances can wound you, exhaust you, and knock you off course. They still do not get to own your identity or author your ending.

A New Future Requires More Than New Thoughts. It Requires New Evidence. Identity Change through Action. 08/27/2026

You can want a different future with everything in you and still keep giving the old version of yourself the strongest evidence. That is the tension at the heart of my new article, “A New Future Requires More Than New Thoughts. It Requires New Evidence.”

Thought matters. Vision matters. Intention matters. But when familiar pressure continues producing the same familiar response, the old identity keeps receiving confirmation that nothing has truly changed.

In this article, I explore why positive thinking can lose its influence when behavior continues testifying for the old pattern. I also examine how beliefs shape what we notice and interpret, why familiar responses become automatic, and how transformation can begin long before the final breakthrough.

It begins with Evidence of Deviation, the moment an old cue arrives and you respond differently. As I teach through Validus Coaching and Consulting, "Transformation does not begin when the new pattern is complete. Transformation begins at the first deviation from the old pattern."

The article also introduces the Validus Re-Axis Method™: Regulate. Remember. Realign. The method does not promise control over other people, circumstances, systems, or outcomes. It helps us recover intentional authorship over the next response available to us.

If you have ever wondered why wanting change has not been enough, or whether one small new action really counts, I wrote this for you.

During that season, I began coaching. Not because I had escaped the struggle, but because Michelle and I decided survival would describe our circumstances, not define who we were. As homeless people, we learned to thrive more than many people who had homes, jobs, and money. We stopped surrendering our direction to shame, blame, and helplessness. Before the evidence of a better life appeared, we began responding like people capable of building one.

What if the force holding you back is not a lack of motivation, but momentum moving in the wrong direction?

The patterns we repeat do more than shape our behavior. They reinforce beliefs, influence identity, and quietly train tomorrow to resemble yesterday. That is why wanting change is not always enough. A different future begins when you interrupt the old response and start creating new evidence of who you are becoming.

That is the heart of The Momentum Mind, and I am proud to announce that the paperback edition is now available. This book brings psychology, lived experience, and field-tested coaching together to help readers understand why old patterns persist and how intentional action can redirect what happens next.

If you are ready to stop surrendering your direction to patterns that have already taken enough from you, this book was written for you. Your past may have shaped you, but it has not earned the right to author your future.

Every choice becomes a private piece of evidence. It tells you whether you keep promises to yourself, retreat when resistance appears, or move in the direction you claim matters.

Over time, those choices form an identity loop. Your self-image influences your behavior, your behavior creates evidence, and that evidence strengthens the story you expect to live again. This is not about shame; it is about authorship.

Transformation does not always begin with a dramatic breakthrough. Sometimes it begins when one deliberate choice contradicts an old story, then another choice makes that evidence harder to dismiss. You do not need to feel like the person you are becoming before you act. You begin becoming that person by giving the new identity something real to stand on.

The Momentum Mind explores how repeated patterns shape your direction and how intentional action can help you reclaim it. If your current choices keep returning you to a life you have outgrown, order your copy on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HF4HD9ML

A dream years in the making is now real.

My new book, The Momentum Mind: Break Old Patterns and Change Your Direction, is officially available on Amazon.

This moment carries more than the completion of a manuscript. It carries years of lived experience, rebuilding, learning, reflection, writing, rewriting, and refusing to abandon a message I believed could help someone move forward.

Many of you know that my life did not follow a straight road. Michelle and I have experienced seasons that demanded resilience, faith, reinvention, and the courage to keep moving when the destination remained uncertain. Those experiences helped shape this book.

The Momentum Mind was written for people who are tired of starting over and unwilling to surrender another year to patterns that have already taken enough.

To every person who believed in me, encouraged us, prayed for us, challenged me, or remained close through the difficult chapters: thank you. You are part of this milestone.

The book is ready. The message is ready. The journey begins now.

Many people are not blocked by a lack of desire. They are blocked because the required behavior conflicts with the person they have learned to believe they are.

You may want visibility while still identifying as someone who should remain unnoticed. You may want success while quietly believing that ambition makes you selfish. You may want healthier relationships while continuing to see yourself as the person who must accept less to avoid being abandoned.

This is why willpower alone often struggles to sustain transformation. Every new behavior must negotiate with the identity already governing your choices. Lasting change becomes more possible when you stop forcing actions onto an unchanged self-concept and begin building an identity capable of supporting the life you want. The question is not only, “What must I do differently?” It is also, “Who must I permit myself to become?”

How many times have you told yourself, “This time will be different”?

You meant it. You felt ready. You began with hope. Then familiar fears resurfaced, old reactions returned, and the same pattern gradually reclaimed control.

That cycle can make even a strong person question their ability to change. But the problem may not be your motivation. It may be the accumulated momentum of thoughts, habits, beliefs, and responses repeated long enough to feel like identity.

You are not condemned to keep repeating what you practiced, inherited, adapted to, or survived.

The Momentum Mind offers a practical four-part system—Recognize, Redirect, Reinforce, and Reflect—to help you understand your patterns, interrupt unhelpful cycles, and build a new direction through sustainable action.

You do not need another temporary promise. You need a direction your future can follow.

A difficult season can tempt you to turn outcomes into a verdict about who you are. A failed attempt becomes “I am a failure.” A delayed dream becomes “I am not capable.” A disappointing chapter begins masquerading as the conclusion of your entire story.

Results provide information, but they do not possess the authority to define your value. They reveal what your present habits, decisions, beliefs, resources, and circumstances have been producing. That information can be studied, challenged, and redirected.

You are not required to defend every result you have created. You are allowed to learn from it. When you stop confusing feedback with identity, you reclaim the ability to change course without destroying your confidence. Your life may be showing you where your momentum has been heading, but you still have the power to choose where it goes next.
