If you’ve ever asked yourself that question in the stands… you’re not alone.

So when another player gets the spot — especially when your son has demonstrated the skill set — it can feel confusing… and personal.

Here’s the hard truth:

Sometimes it’s development.
Sometimes it’s size.
Sometimes it’s seniority.
Sometimes it’s politics.
Sometimes it’s favoritism.
And yes — sometimes it’s factors that have nothing to do with skill at all.

In the early teen years, development plays a huge role. Bigger, earlier-maturing athletes often get first looks. In high school, it can get even more complex. Multi-sport athletes may get preference. Coaches may lean toward seniors. There may be internal dynamics you simply can’t see from the bleachers.

But here’s what matters:

📌 A position does not define your child’s future.

This generation has more exposure opportunities than ever before.
High school ball is one path.
Summer leagues are another.
Showcases exist for a reason.
Video exists. Recruiting platforms exist. Independent travel teams exist.

And for younger players? Development is still the main story.

Being overlooked at 13 doesn’t determine who they’ll be at 17.

Being second today doesn’t mean invisible tomorrow.

Sometimes the delay builds something deeper:
• Humility
• Work ethic
• Mental toughness
• Faith

And those traits often outlast raw opportunity.

Encourage your son to control what he can control:
His effort.
His attitude.
His preparation.
His response.

The rest? That’s noise.

If the environment truly isn’t healthy, there are other teams. Other coaches. Other paths. Especially at the youth level.

At the high school level, sometimes the lesson isn’t about moving — it’s about growing where you’re planted and trusting the process.

Remind your son:

Your value is not your position.
Your identity is not your lineup spot.
Your future is bigger than one coach’s decision.

And most importantly…

⚾ Baseball has many doors.
✝️ God has even more.

Stay steady. Stay supportive. Stay faithful.

Your son is being shaped — even in the moments that don’t feel fair.

⚾ What Old-School High School Baseball Coaches Are REALLY Testing (And Most Players Never Notice)

Most parents think playing time comes down to stats.

Hits. RBIs. Velocity. Exit velo.

But ask any veteran high school coach and they’ll tell you this truth:

👉 They’re watching your son’s attitude long before they trust his talent.

Some things coaches quietly test:

• How he reacts when he gets pulled
• His body language after a strikeout or error
• Whether he sulks on the bench or supports teammates
• How he handles public correction
• If he hustles when nobody’s watching
• How he treats freshmen and struggling players

Here’s the part parents often miss 👇

A coach will sometimes bench a good player on purpose
Just to see:
– Does he stay engaged?
– Does he become a leader?
– Or does he become a problem?

Coaches aren’t just building lineups.
They’re building culture.

⚠️ Talent gets you noticed.
⚠️ Attitude gets you trusted.
⚠️ Trust gets you on the field.

This is why two kids with similar talent can have very different outcomes.

As parents, the best thing we can do isn’t yell from the stands…
It’s helping our kids understand how they’re being evaluated when the stat book is closed.

⚾ Hitting, Development, and the Long View ⚾

At the travel ball level, there’s no denying it — hitting gets a lot of attention.

Players who are bigger, stronger, and more physically developed often hit the ball harder and farther. On smaller fields, those balls clear the fence more easily — and as a result, those players tend to get starting roles, sometimes even in positions where they’re still learning defensively.

That can be frustrating to watch as a parent — especially when your son is still developing, still growing, still finding his strength.

But here’s the truth many parents need to hear:

👉 Just because your child isn’t hitting for power right now doesn’t mean they never will.

Every age group has different field dimensions.
Every player develops on a different timeline.
And many kids who dominate early are simply further along physically — not necessarily better long-term players.

Power is often a moment-in-time advantage.

Mechanics, plate discipline, baseball IQ, and work ethic — those are long-term investments.

You can hire the best hitting coach in the world, but a player will only hit the ball as hard as their body allows at that stage. That’s not failure — that’s biology.

This is where encouragement matters most.

Instead of chasing power too early, help your child:
• Build clean, repeatable mechanics
• Learn strike-zone awareness
• Develop confidence at the plate
• Stay disciplined in tough at-bats
• Trust the process, even when results lag behind

Because here’s the part that often gets overlooked:

⚾ Many of today’s elite players were late bloomers.
They weren’t the biggest at 10U.
They weren’t the strongest at 12U.
But they were building foundations while others were cashing in early.

And when the physical tools finally caught up — they cashed out big.

If you don’t know the game well, surround yourself with people who do.
Invest in good coaching.
Get extra reps.
Don’t rely on the travel team alone for development.

Most importantly — remind your child that their value isn’t measured by how far the ball travels today.

Development takes time.
Faith requires patience.
And growth always shows up — right on schedule.
