SOME THINGS ARE BIGGER THAN BASKETBALL. 🏀❤️
The Wanda Gonzalez Showcase is one of those things.
THE WHY!!!
This showcase is not simply about basketball games or training officials. It is about honoring a woman whose love for the game, dedication to officiating, and commitment to others left a lasting mark on the San Antonio basketball community.
Wanda Gonzalez began officiating high school basketball in 1998 and became a dedicated member of the San Antonio Basketball Officials Association. She poured her heart into the game and into helping train and mentor other officials.
December 2014, everything changed.
Wanda was hit by a drunk driver in a devastating accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury. At the time, she was one of San Antonio’s top basketball officials and was also officiating Division I college basketball.
Since that day, Wanda and her family have faced a journey that no family ever asks for—one filled with challenges, rehabilitation, sacrifice, strength, and unwavering love.
Her passion and dedication were so meaningful that in 2015, the chapter voted to name its basketball officiating camp in her honor.
And that is why we continue,
for the past six years, We have been honored to carry on the Wanda Gonzalez Showcase wherever I am coaching and donate proceeds back to Wanda and her family.
We do it because her story matters.
We do it because her family deserves to know that they are not walking this journey alone.
And we do it because sometimes the greatest lessons we teach our athletes don’t happen just on the basketball court.
They happen when we show them what it means to give back, stand beside someone, honor a legacy, and use the game we love to make a difference.
Wanda gave so much to basketball.
Now, we have the privilege of giving back to her. ❤️
To Wanda and her family: We see you. We stand with you. We remember. And we will continue to honor you every year!
Come show your support on Saturday September 19th at Southwest High School. !! 🙏🥰❤️
