Incoming freshman Luke Skarda has been working on keeping the backside connected and creating a more efficient sequence through the swing.
The focus is on maintaining connection through the load, controlling the barrel, and allowing the lower half to fire while the upper half stays in sync. When that sequence is right, Luke can stay in the zone longer, adjust to velocity and off-speed, and still carry his power through contact.
The goal is to build a swing that can handle higher-level pitching without sacrificing the intent and juice that make Luke dangerous in the box.
He’s putting himself in position to make a run at Newcomer of the Year as a freshman on varsity at Steele HS.

The BIGGEST thing I had to learn as a ballplayer: “It’s not personal”
Just because your on coaches “bad side” doesn’t mean you’re not a good player. Sometimes it’s your actions and attitude that is rubbing Coach the wrong way. It’s up to us as players to not only be a good player BUT also be trustable to get our name written in the lineup consistently.
A college coach once told me “How can I play you if I can’t even trust you?”
Sometimes it’s deeper than numbers and stats. It’s about keeping the culture intact and putting a consistent product on the field 💯
I see it every tryout season.
Parents and players become more concerned with being on the “top” Major team, joining the biggest organization, wearing the best-looking uniform, or having the right logo on their chest than they are with actually getting better.
And honestly… I understand it.
Nobody wants to feel like their kid is “behind.” Everyone wants to be part of the organization that looks successful from the outside.
But baseball doesn’t care about the logo.
The game rewards development and consistency.
I’d rather see a player on a team where he is challenged, coached, held accountable, gets uncomfortable, fails, adjusts, and becomes a better player than a player sitting on a “top” roster and chasing rings simply because it looks good on Instagram.
Ask yourself:
Is my son getting better?
Is he being challenged?
Is he learning how to compete?
Is he learning how to handle failure?
Is he developing skills that will matter when he gets older?
Is the coaching genuinely invested or just writing a lineup?
Because being able to say “my kid plays for ___” doesn’t mean much when you get to the HS/College level.
Youth baseball has become so focused on status that sometimes we forget the actual purpose of playing.
Development over recognition.
Progress over popularity.
Getting better over looking better.
The best organization isn’t always the one with the biggest name or the most wins.
Sometimes it’s the one that cares enough to make your kid better.
