Tip Tuesday: Be Honest About What You Can Do

After my recent hunts in Russia, this one deserves repeating.

One of my Dagestan tur hunts was a 10-hour round trip, climbing straight out of the valley into nasty country and shooting at almost 12,000 feet. It was brutal—and a good reminder that some hunts demand a lot more physically than others.

Before any hunt, be honest with yourself and your guide about your fitness, health, experience, and limitations. Your guide isn’t asking to judge you. We need to know what you can realistically do so we can plan the best hunt possible and put you in the best position to succeed.

Don’t exaggerate your abilities. Don’t wait until you’re halfway up the mountain to mention a limitation.

Prepared hunters—and honest hunters—have better hunts.

Russia made me work for this one.

After a trip with almost no WiFi, no working sat phone, no American credit cards—and plenty of hard hunting—I wrapped things up with a big Kuban tur and completed my tur slam.

This was a heck of a way to finish. Great camp, great food, good horses, beautiful country, and plenty of tur.

I shot this 13-year-old ram at 365 yards across a big canyon. He measured 30.5 cm at the bases and 86 cm long.

A super Kuban tur and a pretty damn good ending to an unforgettable trip.

Tur Slam complete.

TIP TUESDAY | Don’t Wait Until Opening Morning

Texas 2026–27 hunting and fishing licenses go on sale August 15.

Take five minutes. Get it bought. Make sure you have what you need before the season gets rolling.

Opening morning is a bad time to figure out your license isn’t squared away.

Absolutely brutal hunt. Absolutely worth it.

We hiked straight up from the valley, and I shot this Dagestan tur at almost 12,000 feet. Ten hours round trip in some seriously nasty country.

Then, while we’re sitting in camp eating dinner, about 50 tur bail off the ridge and come all the way down to the river below us, with three big rams practically walking into camp.

Of course they did. 🤦🏽‍♂️

That’s hunting.

Russia is off to a pretty damn good start.

Giant Mid-Caucasian tur down. Back in WiFi just long enough to check in, and now we’re headed for the next hunting area in search of a Dagestan tur.

Tip Tuesday: Spray It Before You Pack.

Every piece of clothing going to Russia gets treated with permethrin before it goes in the duffel.

On early-season hunts, I spray my clothes, pack, boots, and even the outside of my sleeping bag. It helps keep ticks, mosquitoes, and other bugs from becoming part of the trip.

After what I assume was a spider bite in the Yukon a few years ago that left both hands swollen and peeled the skin off my fingers, I don’t skip this step anymore.

A few minutes now can make for a much more enjoyable hunt later.
