Resistance is real, but don’t let it keep you from making progress. 👊🏽

TRUNK ROTATION

🔁 Rotate Rotate Rotate! It is super important to rotate your body, as well as your core routine/exercises. More than just being aesthetically pleasing, the core is responsible for generating power in almost every movement. A weak core will equate to a weak movement. Movement in the transverse (twisting) plane is commonly overlooked when it comes to working out the abs. So, this trunk rotation exercise is here to help with that.

✅ The complexity of this movement is rather simple, and can be done with a band or with cables. It is important that the direction of resistance is parallel to the movement rather than perpendicular. What does that mean? By using a cable machine or bands, the resistance force is moving along the same plane as your body. If you were to use a dumbbell or medicine ball, the resistance force would be perpendicular to the movement (downward) and cause the exercise to be ineffective to the muscles we want to target; those being the external obliques.

BENT OVER DB ROW

🚣🏻‍♂️ I love this movement because it requires minimal equipment, but packs a punch. This exercise can be done whether you’re at a hotel gym, commercial gym, or home gym because all you need is two dumbbells (or kettlebells) and you’re set.

💪🏼 Not only does this exercise work the back muscles, but by having your torso at a 45 degree angle it also challenges your core strength. Be sure to keep your head neutral and your spine straight throughout the movement.

💢 Stuck with limited weights? Try adding a tempo prescription like 3333 to the exercises for an extra challenge. For this exercise that tempo reads:
3 sec - raise/concentric motion
3 sec - hold/isometric motion
3 sec - lowering/eccentric motion
3 sec - rest at the bottom

FIT TIP FRIDAY!

💡 I can’t stress enough about how important it is to know the difference between improvement (progression) and impairment (injury). Too often, I see those who are new to the fitness world dive head first into the deep end by mimicking the movements they see others doing WITH a weight (load) that their body just isn’t ready for. This is where a lot of injuries happen.

☝🏼 Whatever your reasoning may be… know that it’s completely okay to copy a movement you see others doing IF the movement has purpose in your training program (not just random movements thrown together), AND that you start at the beginning with either bodyweight or very light weight to get your body accustomed to the movement before progressing.

🧠 Remember, you’re in this for the long run. So train for the long run. No one just rocks up to the gym the first day and benches 225 # or squats 315 #. It’s not overnight. Learn the basics and then build from there.

Today’s tip touches on 2/5 of our Points of Focus; those being Quality and Sustainability. Every movement we do has a purpose, and we start every movement at the beginning. Check us out at reduxfit.com for Remote/Private training sessions and more!

PUSH PRESS

⚙️ Another great utility exercise that finds its way into our programming very often. It can be used as part of a conditioning piece, a stand alone exercise, or as part of a superset. We love the push press due to its versatility in modality, which means this movement can be done with dumbbells, kettlebells, or a barbell.

💪🏼 This is a great movement to incorporate into your push or shoulder split day. Similar to the strict shoulder press, the primary muscles targeted in this movement are the anterior (front) deltoids. The difference here is that this exercise gets the entire body involved and moving in a cohesive manner which takes focus and coordination. This makes the complexity of the movement moderate.

🎯Coaching Cues: 1) feet straight and shoulder width apart 2) begin movement with a 1/4 squat 3) let the momentum from the squat help you ‘push’ the DBs above your head 4) let the DBs land ’softly’ while simultaneously lowering back into the 1/4 squat

BB INVERTED ROW

💡This is a great utility movement that can be used in warmups, stand alone exercises, and as part of a superset. The inverted row targets the traps, rhomboids, posterior deltoids, as well as the core.

📋The overall complexity of this exercise is low, and is a favorite of mine especially when working with a client that is new to exercising. It’s a simple movement to regress (by making the angle shallower), and to progress (by making the angle steeper, adding weight/instability).

🎯Coaching Cues: 1) hands over bar at about shoulder width 2) squeeze the shoulder blades together through the pull 3) keep body straight during the entire movement.

👏🏽 First post to set the tone for the week ahead!

🚗 Sometimes you’ve got to put your mind in the back seat, and let your body do what it’s capable of. Trust me, it’ll still be yelling at you to stop from back there, but if you turn the music up and drown out the noise you will be amazed at what happens.

📖 I () had to apply this very concept today as I tried to tackle the 20.1 open workout. About 6 minutes in my mind was ready for me to throw the towel in. It’s in these moments where you just have to keep moving, and ignore everything else.
