: LOYAL TO THE SOIL

You can’t expect anything to grow without strong roots, and that was a big part of what we wanted these guys to understand over our 13 weeks together. Before worrying about getting faster, stronger or becoming better baseball players, we spent time on the things everything else grows from. How you think, how you respond when things don’t go your way, the habits you build, the people around you and, of course, Respect : Effort : Attitude.

Growth isn’t always something you can see right away either. Sometimes the most important work is happening underneath the surface. There were good days, frustrating days, days where things clicked and days where they didn’t. You learn, you adjust, you keep showing up and you keep stacking days. Hopefully somewhere along the way, those roots get a little stronger.

Baseball gave us an opportunity to work with these young men, but it was never just about baseball. Stay grounded. Keep growing.

Loyal to the Soil.

Growth Mindset

: SETTING THE PACE

We kicked off our 13 weeks with Grant Baseball with a combine. We needed a baseline and some receipts 😂
Speed. Power. Agility. Strength. We got the numbers, established a baseline and told the guys we’d be doing it all over again at the end.

But that first combine told us a lot more than who was fast, strong or could jump out the gym. You start seeing who competes, who encourages the guy next to them, who responds when they’re tired and who wants another shot because they know they can do better. All the stuff that doesn’t necessarily show up on the spreadsheet.

So for the next 13 weeks, we got to work. Training. Nutrition. Mental fitness. Mobility. Injury prevention. Time in the classroom, time on the field and eventually some time on the trail. Then we ran the combine back at the end to see what three months of work actually looked like. Of course we wanted the numbers to go up. We’re competitive too 😂 And a lot of them did. But could they see their own progress? Did they understand what went into it? Did they learn something about themselves along the way?

That’s the stuff a stopwatch can’t always measure. And probably why the debate between the numbers and the eye test ain’t going away anytime soon. 👀😂

Respect : Effort : Attitude.

: Respect : Effort : Attitude

For 13 weeks, that’s what we asked of the Grant Union High School Baseball team. Not just in the game, but in how they prepared, communicated, responded, showed up for each other and represented their community. What started with some fun & games and a baseline combine became three months of work on & off the field. Different people pouring into these young men. Different settings. Different lessons. Same purpose. And now, a few months removed from it, we finally get to tell the whole story. That part matters to us too.

We’re fortunate to have Jeff Hook as our Creative Director - a storyteller who understands that documenting this work isn’t just about making something look good. It’s about giving these young people and the people pouring into them a chance to be seen. It’s about sharing their why, their passion and hopefully inspiring someone else along the way. And for us, it’s accountability. Because ultimately, we want the lessons to become theirs.

“You can be committed to the process without being emotionally attached to the result.”
- Sal, Grant Baseball Senior

We can tell you what Hike & Hit is. We can tell you what we believe in. We can tell you what we hope these programs accomplish. Or we can show you.

there’s something about being outside before the rest of the world wakes up. starting in the dark, cold air, headlamps on, then slowly watching Lake Tahoe come into view as the first light starts to hit. that feeling right there. you got up for it. you climbed for it. you earned it.

we haven’t caught a Maggie’s Peak sunrise together since summer of 2019. on September 20th, we’re running it back with a 3am start.

this one is rated hard, no way around that. but there’s something different about hiking in the dark - you can’t see the whole climb ahead of you. you’re just locked in on what’s right in front of you, one step at a time. we’ll have a lead, mid & anchor, & the summit doesn’t have to be the win. find your pace, find your spot & catch the sunrise wherever the mountain takes you.

questions? reach out. we’re always happy to help. we also encourage everyone to do a little research beforehand & download AllTrails, especially since we’ll be starting in the dark.

: Loch’d Inn

our first ever hybrid group adventure & we finally got to check this one off the list six years later.

most of the group day hiked in and about seven of us stayed overnight. when we first started hosting group hikes, we eventually wanted to start hosting backpacking trips. however, like most things in the world, covid had other plans.

with that being said, we’re already working on our 2027 adventure calendar & we’re looking forward to more of these hybrid events!

hope to see y’all at our sunrise @ Maggie’s Peak hike on 9/19

this one has been on our list since 2020 - then COVID had other plans. we’re finally making it happen. don’t let the elevation gain scare you. it’s a steady, gradual climb w/ plenty of spots to catch your breath. we’ll start early to beat the heat & (hopefully) the crowds. parking fills up quickly, but there’s overflow parking near the ranger station before the trailhead if needed.

bring plenty of water, a swimsuit, & something to snack on at the lake. trust us, you’ll want to jump in. at&t gets service at the trailhead, then it’s just us & the mountains. we’ll also be sharing the trail w/ overnight backpackers & campers, so let’s be respectful & give them some space. they’ve been carrying their house on their back while we just packed sandwiches. 😅

we do ask that everyone register for this one so we know who’s joining us. registration link is below or in our bio. as always, feel free to reach out w/ any questions. we also encourage everyone to do a little research beforehand so you know what to expect.
