I get asked often: “Why do you coach? You don’t get paid, you spend your summers at tournaments, your free time is spent at practices, running a budget, scheduling tournaments, ordering uniforms, ensuring you have a roster, ect….” They say “why do you do it , I don’t understand, is it for the trophies? Is it because you think you’re going to coach at the next level? Why?”
It’s not about the wins, trophies or me at all.
When you see a players face when they get that hit, catch, strikeout, RBI, or HR that they have been working so hard for at practice, or when your team comes together and finally makes that double play or gets the pick off they’ve been working on… that’s the win, the look on their faces, the smiles, the high fives, the team cheering, when they get that victory within the game, even if we lose, we won. When they’re all sitting under a shade tree and you see your team hanging out in between games bonding and making memories they will carry for the rest of their lives, when a player says thanks coach, or she applies for athlete of the year and says your her inspiration. When you see young ladies become strong powerful young women who will be set up for success in life, or the quite timid girl who showed up to tryouts become a confident strong young women. That’s why I coach, to be a small part of a their journey we call life. I hope I made a positive difference in helping them become those strong confident young women set up for a happy successful life. That’s why. No amount of money could by that…
