I feel so lucky to teach children that truly have sun inside if them. Watching them discover their love for the water as they learn to be competent in the water and take responsibility for their own safety in the water is truly the most rewarding work I have ever done.

Let’s say it louder for the people in the back.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages four and under.

Swimming should be every child’s first sport. The water won’t wait. Soccer and dance can wait.

I said what I said.

I’m going to wash that black hat now.

We should give children the opportunity to do hard things, starting at a you age.

Because when life’s challenges arise, they can tell themselves “I don't know how I'm going to do this, but I know I can do hard things.”

That is what Reno and Incline Village children learn in ISR Self-Rescue. Some children cry in lessons because they don't have the words to express themselves, but if we shield children from all challenge and discomfort in life they won't have the opportunity to grow and become resilient.

Learning to Self-Rescue young is a skill that can save their life, but it also gives them confidence that spills over into other arwaxo their life!

Infant Swimming Resuece (ISR) Self-Rescue students can feel some big emotions as they do skills that are challenging.

This student is fully skilled in ISR Self-Rescue, and is finding her float after stepping off stairs while wearing winter clothes.

She learned how to work through the emotions and stay calm, finding her air and moving towards an exit.

Because most drownings happen when a child isn’t expected to be swimming and while they are wearing clothes.

Because an accidental submersion will come with emotion and we can practice skills while keeping calm.

This isn’t trauma. It’s preparation. And this student now cones to see me for Maintenance weekly and has so much fun in her lessons!

Imagine if her parents had quiet because she cried during lessons. She wouldn’t have life-saving skills, wouldn’t have had the opportunity to learn how to tackle something challenging, and wouldn’t know the joy that the water now brings her.

What I wish Reno and Incline Village parents knew about water safety:

1. Lessons that focus on play and songs are not protecting your child from drowning.
2. Using flotation devices in pools teaches your children to to drown if they ever find water alone. These devices show them that they can get unlimited air without any effort in the vertical position. And makes them much more confident then their water competency!
3. Most pediatric drownings happen when a child is not expected to be in the water - aka they are fully clothed.
4. Drowning requires multiple layers of protection to keep a child safe. Think of your drowning prevention strategy as stacking slices of Swiss Cheese - one layer will have holes! Adult supervision is not enough. Self-Rescue skills, barriers and alarms are critical as well!
4. It should take weeks and not years to get your child independent Self-Rescue skills. If your child is in lessons where they aren't putting there face in the water and aren't learning an independent float, I encourage you to consider ISR!
