šŸ›¼ FOUR WHEELS ON THE GROUNDā„¢ — BACK TO BASICS | PART 5: YOUR FIRST STOP

Okay, so now we’re ROLLING… but we have to know how to STOP too! šŸ˜‚šŸ›‘šŸ›¼

Throughout this Back to Basics series, we’ve been building from the ground up—getting comfortable on our skates, learning our proper skating stance, finding our balance, shifting our body weight, taking those first steps and finally beginning to roll.

Now in Part 5, we’re learning one of the first stopping techniques I like to teach my beginner skaters—the bubble/plow stop.

If you’re already practicing your bubbles, you can use that same movement to help you slow yourself down and work your way into your plow.

Keep those knees soft and bent, stay in your skating stance, push those skates out, bring them back in, and begin applying pressure through those inside edges as your toes come slightly inward.

And remember—don’t let those skates touch or cross.

If you need another bubble to help slow yourself down before coming into your plow, that’s okay! As you become more comfortable and gain more control, you can begin working toward going directly into your plow stop.

We’re not rushing it.

We’re learning CONTROL. šŸ’ŖšŸ¾šŸ›¼

Because learning how to get moving on your skates is important—but learning how to control that movement and bring yourself to a complete stop is just as important.

Foundation first. Control comes with practice.

PART 4: YOUR FIRST STEPS & FIRST ROLL

ā€œAlright, so we are back with Part 4 of Four Wheels on the Groundā„¢ — Back to Basics.

So far, we’ve gotten comfortable being on our skates, we’ve learned our proper skating stance, and we’ve worked on finding our balance and shifting our body weight from side to side.

Now we’re ready to start MOVING.

But I don’t want you to worry about trying to take off and skate just yet. We’re going to build into that movement.

First, get back into that skating stance. Keep those knees soft and bent, chest up, head up, and eyes looking forward.

Now remember what we learned about shifting our body weight. When I shift my weight onto one side, that takes some of the weight off of my opposite foot, which allows me to pick that skate up.

So we’re going to shift and lift.

Shift…and lift.

Shift…and lift.

From there, we’re going to start with a simple march.

Left…right…left…right.

Keep those steps small and controlled. You don’t have to pick your feet way up off the ground, and you definitely don’t have to rush.

Once you start feeling comfortable marching in place, start taking those same small, controlled steps forward.

And as you get more comfortable, instead of continuing to pick those skates all the way up, start allowing your wheels to ROLL.

You’re still shifting your body weight from one side to the other. You’re still keeping those knees soft and bent. Your chest is still up, your head is up, and your eyes are looking forward.

The only difference is now we’re allowing those small steps to gradually turn into a roll.

Don’t force it, and don’t worry about speed. Take your time.

March…step…shift…and ROLL. šŸ›¼

Keep practicing those small, controlled movements until they start to feel comfortable and natural.

And now that we know how to get moving and we’re beginning to roll, there’s something else we definitely need to know—

HOW TO STOP. šŸ›‘šŸ›¼

Follow me for Part 5, where we’re going to work on our first stopping technique.

Strong looks different at every stage of life. šŸ’ŖšŸ¾āœØ

For me, it’s not about trying to look 25 again. I’m 51, and I’m interested in becoming stronger, more mobile, more grounded, and more connected to my body with every year that I’m given.

I move my body.
I strength train.
I stretch.
I skate.
I walk.
I breathe.
I rest.
And I keep showing up. 🌱

Because wellness isn’t something I just teach—it’s something I LIVE.

And yes… every now and then I’m going to stop and flex a little bit. šŸ˜‚šŸ’ŖšŸ¾ I’ve earned that flex!

Here’s to building a body that supports the life we want to LIVE—not just one that looks good in a picture.
