The only quilt claimed by a member of my family: this Riveting quilt in Almost Blue. Wayyyy back in the beforetimes, the elder Junior Bobbin figured out that helping with quilt layout was a great way to delay bedtime. We tweaked this gradient until it was juuuust right.

Kiddo said these were their fave fabrics ever and asked if they could keep the quilt. I was on a deadline to get the quilt made and shipped to Quilt Market, where it hung in the booth. (I thought the metallic-accented denim-inspired prints were perfect for the hardware-shaped blocks!)

Kiddo asked if I could make them another quilt exactly like it, with the exact same fabrics. (The grey with the geometric silver print near the bottom of this pic was their absolute favorite of all!) I told them they could keep this one, after it got back from Quilt Market, once I finished the binding, which was only glue basted in place.

Before that could happen, it was pulled into service to comfort a sick kiddo one day, so I snapped this shot.

It's been so much fun getting to know my fellow campers at this week!

Let's dive into these 2 Vortex quilts to see how quilting can give you that touchable texture. First up: crib size rainbow edition in Phosphor with fussy cuts from Almost Blue.

Changing the density and direction of quilting from one strip to the next gives us separation and movement.

Echoing around the fussy cut motifs makes them pop, and the ¼" straight lines add structure to contain the fmq strips.

The result is touchable texture that really emphasizes the piecing and fabrics.

See how the straight line quilting really pulls you in? Throw size in Declassified and Spectrastatic

The lines get denser toward the center of the block, which gives the impression that the center diamonds are further away, sucked into a vortex!

That really draws your eye to those fussy cuts. Rather than echo, I traced the edges of the motifs.

Straight lines following the darkest strip add separation from one block to the next.

day 3: texture for days!

Day 2 of is the most used quilt. In my house that's this Yuma quilt I made in 2018 using Alison Glass Chroma batiks. Since it's not one of my patterns, it stays on the couch, rather than coming with me to trunk shows. It's also the Kitty's signal that she may occupy my lap.
