Here is a drill you can do at home today.

Step to separate. Modified for catchers.

Start in a neutral but engaged position. Maximize tension on the backside. Begin to separate the front side away from you without losing that backside connection.

Lower half and upper half separate together. Creating stretch between both points. Front foot strike that is firm, directional, anchored. Deep. Like a pitcher coming down the mound.

Repeat that movement three times. On the third rep, it is live. Use all the tension you built and just think to pull with the front side. Let the arm work naturally.

When the rest of the body is sequencing correctly, the arm should not feel like it is doing much at all. That feeling is what we are chasing.

If you're a high school catcher (or the parent of one) who wants to build a throw that helps you get recruited and perform once you get there,

DM me 'POPTIME' and we'll ask you a few questions to see if the program is a good fit for you.

Your back shoulder, back hip, back knee, and back foot.

Together they make up what I call the backside spring.

As the ball comes toward your glove, the job of the lead knee is to drive away from an engaged backside.

The tension you feel between those two points, that stretch through the lower half, is what pulls you through the throw.

The upper half should not be doing much of anything special. Set it and forget it. Smooth and short.

The lower half is where the violence lives. That is where the force comes from, without a single extra movement anywhere else in the body.

Simple upper half. Aggressive lower half. That is the whole throw.

POPTIME PR hits a 1.91.

Came into the program at a 2.01 PR. Smashed it quickly.

Velocity is force output magnified by time through the baseball.

Say that cue enough times and it will change how you think about throwing.

The most efficient way to move a baseball toward a target is to stay behind it and push it there as directly as possible.

The moment you come around the ball instead of through it, you lose the ability to apply force to it.

You are spinning off of it instead of driving it.

Stay through the baseball as long and as firm as you can.

That is where velocity comes from.

That is where backspin comes from too.

It is not an arm speed problem. It is a path problem.

You get five throws at a showcase. Most catchers waste all five trying to do the same thing on every rep.

Here is what to do instead. First two throws, do not worry about pop time at all. Just throw it as hard as you possibly can and get dialed in.

Once you are accurate and warmed up, your last three throws, go as quick as you can.

Now you have a shot at your best velocity reading and your best pop time reading, since they only publish your best two.

One rep block for arm strength. One rep block for quickness. Do not try to do both on every throw.

He is throwing 1.92s and 1.93s. His exchange time is a .70 to .73.

That gap tells you everything. When your pop time and your exchange time do not match up, arm strength is covering for a mechanical issue, not fixing it.

Here is the fix. Get as deep as possible into your throw before the ball hits your glove. That is it. That is the whole cue.

The less time you spend getting organized after the catch, the less time the ball spends in your hand before it leaves.

That is where exchange time actually comes from.

A big arm can hide a slow exchange for a while. It will not hide it forever.
