APSN Volleyball Top 5 — Week 5
Paintsville holds the top spot after statement win; Shelby Valley stays close behind as Betsy Layne surges
Week 5 brought some separation to the APSN Volleyball Top 5, with head-to-head results, tournament competition and a handful of convincing sweeps helping shape this week’s order.
No. 1 Paintsville — 18-3
Paintsville earned the No. 1 ranking the most convincing way possible: by beating the team directly behind it.
The Tigers went to Shelby Valley on Sept. 15 and came away with a 3-1 victory, giving Paintsville another major Region 15 result. One night later, Paintsville handled Magoffin County 3-0, extending its winning streak.
Paintsville then traveled to Owensboro for the Kentucky All “A” Classic. The Tigers opened tournament play Friday with a 2-0 win over Raceland before falling 2-1 to Bishop Brossart later that day.
Saturday brought another split, with Paintsville defeating Leslie County 2-0 before dropping a 2-1 decision to Holy Cross.
Paintsville owns the most important result in this week’s rankings: a direct victory over Shelby Valley. Add wins over Magoffin County, Raceland and Leslie County, plus a challenging tournament schedule, and the Tigers have the strongest Week 5 résumé.
No. 2 Shelby Valley — 21-3
Shelby Valley’s week included their second tough loss of the season to the Paintsville Tigers, but the Wildcats remain firmly in the No. 2 spot.
The response was strong. On Sept. 17, Shelby Valley traveled to Johnson Central and swept the Golden Eagles 3-0.
The Wildcats finish the ranking period at 21-3, one of the best overall records in the area.
Shelby Valley has only three losses through 24 matches, but two of those came directly against Paintsville. That head-to-head result gives Paintsville the edge this week, while Shelby Valley’s overall body of work keeps the Wildcats comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.
No. 3 Betsy Layne — 13-5
Few teams helped themselves more during Week 5 than Betsy Layne.
The Bobcats opened the stretch on Sept. 14 by sweeping East Ridge 3-0.
Then came one of their biggest wins of the season.
On Sept. 15, Betsy Layne traveled to Pikeville and defeated the Panthers 3-1, ending Pikeville’s home winning streak. The match was much tighter than the final score suggests, with three of the four sets requiring at least 26 points. Betsy Layne won the final two sets 26-24 and 28-26.
The Bobcats kept rolling Thursday by sweeping Lawrence County 3-0.
With Betsy Layne beating both East Ridge and Pikeville during the ranking window and went unbeaten during the week the Bobcats sit comfortably at No. 3.
No. 4 Pikeville — 13-6
Pikeville had a productive week despite one close loss.
The Panthers opened Monday with a convincing 3-0 victory over Prestonsburg.
The following night, Betsy Layne came to Pikeville and won 3-1 in a match decided by several extremely close sets.
Pikeville responded well Thursday by sweeping Pike County Central 3-0, winning the sets 25-21, 25-17 and 25-17.
Pikeville went 2-1 during the week and remains one of the strongest teams in the area, but the head-to-head loss to Betsy Layne gives the Bobcats the advantage for the No. 3 position. Pikeville’s bounce-back win over Pike County Central keeps the Panthers firmly sitting in the 4th spot .
No. 5 Johnson Central — 8-12
Johnson Central’s record does not match the teams above it, but the Golden Eagles continue to play a demanding schedule.
They opened the week on Monday with a five-set loss to Boyd County, 3-2, showing they could push a quality opponent deep into a match.
Later in the week, Johnson Central ran into Shelby Valley and was swept 3-0.
The Golden Eagles finish the ranking period at 8-12.
Johnson Central continues to face strong competition and has shown the ability to stay competitive in difficult matches. The five-set battle with Boyd County is an example of why the record does not tell the entire story, but the loss to Shelby Valley also shows the current gap between Johnson Central and the top four.
Next Up: East Ridge — 10-5
East Ridge remains just outside the APSN Top 5 and is firmly in the conversation as the next team in line.
The Warriors’ biggest result during the last weeks window came against Betsy Layne, where East Ridge suffered a 3-0 loss. That result keeps them behind the Bobcats this week, but a 10-5 overall record shows East Ridge has still put together a strong first half of the season.
The Warriors have done enough to stay within striking distance of the rankings, and they now enter an important stretch where a few quality wins could change the picture quickly.
East Ridge has the overall record to warrant serious consideration, but it needs another statement result against one of the teams currently ahead of it. The loss to Betsy Layne is the biggest reason the Warriors remain on the outside for Week 5. A strong response in upcoming Region 15 matches could put East Ridge directly into the Top 5.
Region 15 volleyball remains wide open, and with more head-to-head matchups ahead, there is still plenty of room for the rankings to change.
