In addition to working on design projects, Troy Depperschmidt leads our IT efforts. He keeps our data safe, troubleshoots issues as they arise, and equips our team with the right tools. Today, we're excited to celebrate all he does for our firm.

We recently asked him to share what sparked his interest in the field, and he said, "My journey into IT began in college, where I complemented my major with a minor focused on technology and programming. Learning multiple programming languages taught me more than coding. It helped me develop the logical reasoning, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills that are invaluable. As I progressed in my career, that foundation evolved into a commitment to lifelong learning, recognizing that technology is constantly changing and requires continuous adaptation. Over the years, my focus has expanded from technical implementation to strategic technology leadership. The greatest reward has been helping our organization make sound, practical technology decisions that support both immediate objectives and long-term sustainability. By balancing innovation with business needs, I have been able to contribute to organizational resilience, efficiency, and future growth."

While we've enjoyed looking back at all we've accomplished over the last 25 years, our team is always trying to move our business and designs forward. We asked three co-workers to predict how they think the industry will change in the next five years.

Mike McKenna, PE, PTOE, ENV SP, Principal and Community Leader said, "I think companies will be expected to provide higher levels of security, especially as the use of AI for design becomes more prevalent. Company overhead rates will continue to rise in proportion to the increased cost of hardware and software. We may even see a change in how clients want to pay for services rendered. Last, but not least, a large percentage of the younger generation seems to value time more than money, so we may see a shift towards reduced work hours and as a result, salaries."

In honor of National Day of Service and Remembrance, we sat down with our President, Jason Davis, who has served our country, deploying three times while at Affinis.

We asked him, "How has serving in the military influenced the way you lead?" He said, "My military service taught me that leadership is about service and taking care of the team ahead of yourself. It's rolling up your sleeves and leading from the front, as well as keeping calm when making a decision. Leading in high-pressure environments required me to make decisions with limited information, adapt to changing circumstances, and maintain focus on the mission, while taking care of my team. Those experiences helped me develop resilience, accountability, and a strong commitment to mentoring others."

We asked him how Affinis has supported him while he was away on deployment or at trainings, and he said, "Affinis supported all my deployments. While I was gone, others had to pick up the work that I normally would perform. That meant leading the structures team, federal work, levee district meetings and reviews, and everything in between."

Recently, we gave our team something to taco ’bout! 🌮

We brought a food truck to the office and treated our co-workers to a well-deserved lunch from Taco-ish. It was a great chance to step away from our desks and enjoy some good food while spending time with one another.

In honor of our 25th Anniversary, we're highlighting co-workers who've been at Affinis since 2001. Today, we're excited to feature Aubrey Meyer, PLS, Principal

We asked him how his role has evolved over time, and he said, "I started with Affinis in 2001 as a land survey field instrument operator and worked my way up to Party Chief in 2004. Around 2005, I started doing more office technical work after taking classes to learn AutoCAD and MicroStation. In 2006, I moved into what was then our Lee’s Summit office to help with a large Missouri DOT project, working as a CAD technician with our highway team. That experience took me away from surveying for a while, but it also gave me the opportunity to learn something completely different. I’ve always been willing to adapt and find ways to contribute wherever I’m needed."

"Then, in 2011, I became licensed as a professional land surveyor in Missouri, and in 2012 I returned to surveying full time and became licensed in Kansas. Since returning to surveying, my work has continued to take me in a lot of different directions. One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Affinis is that they support people who want to grow in their careers. As a smaller civil engineering firm, there has always been an opportunity to stretch, learn something new, and take on a different challenge," said Meyer.

To maintain a high quality of life, the City of Leawood, KS Government continually reinvests in their infrastructure as part of their Residential Street Reconstruction Program. Each year, they select a set of streets that are most in need. The 2023 project site spanned three locations: 97th Place between Mission and Ensley, Ensley Lane North from 91st to 93rd, and Ensley Lane from the City limits to Ensley Lane South Cul-De-Sac.
