EMDR Resourcing with art & making animals with air dry clay! π¦
This is one of our favorite ways to help kids resource an inner strength such as feeling confident , calm , patience or brave . π
Step 1: Have the child identify a quality or characteristic they would like to have more of for a current problem they have! " I want to feel braver!" (when I go to the doctors) or "I want to stay calm" (when a classmate is mean to me). βΊοΈ
Step 2: Have them come up with an animal or creature that represents that quality for them and have them create it with clay or play-doh! ( In this example the child picked a lion to represent being brave being away from mom despite her separation anxiety) π«
Step 3: Have the child select a memory of a time they were brave! Have them noticed what they see, the positive thoughts , how they feel & any good body feelings that go along with the selected memory. π
Step 4: Add a few slow sets of BLS to help child integrate the resource & use the animal or creature they created if possible! The child may choose to follow the animal they created with their eyes or even tap the animal gently for their back & forth movement ! π
βΌοΈPlease note that this intervention should only be offered by therapist fully trained in EMDR! βΌοΈ
If you are not yet trained in EMDR though, you can still do all of the following steps 1-3 & omit step 4 of adding the bilateral stimulation! π₯°

A child's main mode of expression is play! When we engage children in therapy, it's important to remember they will heal BEST in their natural language of play too! π
Getting artsy and creative with finger painting while blending it with EMDR for kids! βπ» π¨
During this session, this little one used her finger painting as her SUD & VOC scale to show me how little it BIG her problem felt by painting cute caterpillars with her fingers! π
The smaller or shorter the caterpillar, the smaller the problem felt. The bigger and longer the caterpillar, the harder and more bothersome the problem was! π
Kids need to play, create, move & SHOW us what is happening for them in EMDR versus TELLING us. This is a wonderfully playful and creative way to ask kids to "show me" with how many fingerprints the problem π«ποΈ
The other thing to consider is that for many kids, the sensory piece of finger painting can help to regulate and soothe while discussing hard and challenging topics ! A win, win!!π₯
If you're a child EMDR therapists, give this a try and let us know how it goes for you! π
