New research in Obstetrics & Gynecology highlights the impact of statewide Perinatal Quality Collaboratives in improving maternal outcomes. Louisiana’s implementation of evidence-based maternal safety bundles was associated with sustained reductions in severe maternal morbidity related to hemorrhage and hypertension, while also narrowing racial disparities in hemorrhage-related outcomes.

📊 New CDC Data: Gestational Hypertension Continues to Rise

A new report from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics highlights a significant increase in gestational hypertension across the United States.

From 2016 to 2024, the national rate of gestational hypertension increased 73%, rising from 6.0% to 10.4%. In 2024, approximately 1 in 10 mothers giving birth in the U.S. had gestational hypertension.

Here in Oklahoma, the rate increased from 5.8% in 2016 to 9.4% in 2024, a 62% increase.

The report also found increases across every maternal age group, race and Hispanic-origin group, BMI category, and every state and the District of Columbia. These trends underscore the continued importance of identifying risk factors, monitoring blood pressure throughout pregnancy, and implementing evidence-based strategies to prevent and manage hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Amniotic fluid embolism is a rare syndrome characterized by sudden cardiorespiratory collapse during labor or soon after delivery. Because of its rarity, many obstetrical providers have no experience in managing amniotic fluid embolism and may therefore benefit from a cognitive aid such as a checklist.

In 2021, the SMFM published a sample checklist for the initial management of amniotic fluid embolism based on standard management guidelines. This newly published article presents an updated checklist with revisions to align the terminology with advanced cardiac life support guidelines.
