Key Matchups
Tennessee is geared up for the season opener against Furman on Saturday. The Paladins travel to Knoxville with a 1-0 record after defeating Anderson University 20-3.
Tennessee pass rush vs. Jake Garcia-- The Furman quarterback is a well-traveled veteran that is now at his fourth school. He was rated a high four-star prospect coming out of high school. Garcia did not post impressive numbers vs. Anderson. He completed 15 of 28 passes for 183 yards and no touchdowns. He was intercepted once in the game. However, the Vol run defense might be tested. Furman rushed for 268 yards in the win and averaged over six yards per carry.
Vol run game vs. Paladins defense-- Furman has a couple of ball hunting linebackers that were instrumental in shutting down the Anderson infantry. The Paladins held the opponent to only six yards gained on the ground on 23 rush attempts. It is exam day for right tackle Ory Williams as he seeks to establish himself and lock up the starting job on the right edge of the UT blocking front. Senior tailback DeSean Bishop will be looking to break out of the gate with an impressive performance in this contest.
Watch for This-- 1. It may just be a pop quiz, but all eyes will be on freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon. Take note of his demeanor on the field, his accuracy throwing the football and his command of the offense at the line of scrimmage. The offensive staff probably does not want him to scramble and run much in this game. George MacInytre should also see some action at some point in this encounter.
2. The performance of the defensive tackles and inside defensive ends will be worth observing on Saturday. The second and third levels of the defense look solid, at least on paper.
Vol Notes
Baseball recruiting hit a high note this year. Ten of the Big Orange freshmen are ranked among the top 150 first year players in college ball.
The courts have Vol basketball's transfer center Jalen Washington in a holding pattern right now as ruling go back and forth between eligible and ineligible. A final decision should be announced within two or three weeks.

Lady Trojan soccer blanks Dyer County

The Dyersburg Lady Trojans picked up their second win in three nights as a pair of early goals set the tone for a rough and messy first half on the way to a 5-0 win over Dyer County in Newbern on Thursday night.
Both teams played strong on defense throughout the first 20 minutes of action before a JulieAnne Cundiff goal put the Lady Trojans on the board in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead.
A foul against the Choctaws later in the first resulted in a yellow card and a free kick for Dyersburg later in the first half. Meredith Zamzow made the most of the opportunity, putting the free kick in with a curve amidst a crowd of black and gold and orange and white. The kick in the 32nd minute put the Lady Trojans on top 2-0 at the half.
During the first half of a physical and defensive game, there were four yellow cards handed out, with all four going to Dyer County. There were a total of six throughout the game as each team received one in the second half.
Dyersburg began to pull away in the second half as Cundiff added her second goal in the 49th minute to push the Lady Trojans' lead to 3-0.
In the 60th minute, Reese Seratt tacked on a goal to put the Lady Trojans up by four goals before a penalty kick five minutes later from Haddy Manneh accounted for the final score.
The Lady Trojans will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 when Dyersburg hosts South Gibson at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, Dyer County returns to the pitch Thursday, Sept. 10 when the Lady Choctaws travel to Alamo to take on Crockett County.

Northview sweeps Three Oaks in Pink Out game

In the first of two Wednesday night meetings between the middle schools in the Dyer County School System, Northview continued its winning ways against its rival with a two-set win at Three Oaks on Wednesday night.
Northview jumped out to an early lead in the first set, scoring seven unanswered points thanks to four aces in seven points by Neeli Todd. Northview answered Three Oaks multiple times and maintained the seven-point lead for the Lady Choctaws from Newbern. The Lady Choctaws from Upper Finley Road rallied with on the line, Three Oaks was able to cut deep into the Northview lead and trim the deficit to 12-8 after good serving from Ryleigh Ing and Cadee Clark. Moments later, an Ella Childress ace trimmed the Northview lead to 15-12. Northview, though, had an answer as Northview ended the set with a 10-1 run to take the opening frame 25-13.
Three Oaks struck first in the second set by Northview hot again to open its offense with another 7-0 run built on four aces from Anna Reid Yates. Though the Lady Choctaws from Upper Finley Road were able to cut into the Northview lead, a Kinley Ozment ace and multiple aces from Yates kept Three Oaks at by as the Lady Choctaws from Newbern took the 25-14 win in the second set to clinch the match.
Northview returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 when the Lady Choctaws travel to Halls. Meanwhile, Three Oaks is in action again on Thursday when Inman comes to town at 6 p.m.
