Every year an estimated 388,000 deaths due to hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) occur in U.S. nursing homes. The fact that nursing homes have evolved into post-acute skilled nursing facilities has increased the potential for the spread of HAIs. Then there is also cold and flu season, which rampantly spreads viruses and respiratory illnesses amongst the immunocompromised residents. - See more at: http://www.cleanlink.com/hs/article/Fighting-Infections-Through-Proper-Disinfection--19884 .r0BLMEJC.dpuf

Since 2001, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has cracked down on hospitals where patients contracted infections during or as a result of their stay. In facilities with readmissions within one month of the initial treatment, CMS is reducing or withholding payments.
Although these “fines” have helped reduce readmission rates, roughly one in five Medicare patients still end up returning for treatment. And in August 2015, it was reported that 2,592 hospitals would be hit with penalties, resulting in a combined loss of $420 million. - See more at:http://www.cleanlink.com/hs/article/Preventing-Hospital-Acquired-Infections-And-Readmissions-Fines--18920 .m5TpZtgl.dpuf

Even with cleaning regulations in place, too often the wrong cleaning materials are used. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported in 2009 that approximately one-third of 325 registered disinfectants and 36 of the 72 tuberculocides tested thus far under its Antimicrobial Testing Program, failed to meet standards for effectiveness against bacteria. - See more at: http://www.cleanlink.com/hs/article/Products-That-Protect-Against-HAIs--18921 .e1UQrBnL.dpuf

The study revealed that the patient’s bed is the epicenter of contamination, with the patient being the source of the contamination. The patient gets a visitor, who sits on the bed briefly and then sits on a chair in the room. The visitor then transfers germs to the surface of the chair from the seat of his or her pants. A nurse comes in and checks the patient’s vitals, then closes the privacy curtain again when she leaves. Those germs now are on the curtain.

The study focuses on a special newly identified strain of MRSA associated with poultry. MRSA is often found in chickens, pigs and other food animals. Researchers know that farmers, farm workers, veterinarians and others working directly with livestock are at risk of MRSA infections. However, this new study, by an international team of researchers headed by Robert Skov, MD, at Statens Serum Institute and Lance Price, PhD, of the Milken Institute School of Public Health (Milken Institute SPH) at the George Washington University, shows that people with no exposure to livestock are becoming colonized and infected with this new strain of poultry-associated MRSA — most likely by eating or handling contaminated poultry meat.

Cutting back on the size of a soap shot may feel like a means to control usage, but ultimately, the end user makes the final call. Instead, facilities should focus on educating staff and end users on proper handwashing techniques, which, in turn, can help to ensure that they don’t use too much soap or — more importantly — not enough. - See more at: http://www.cleanlink.com/hs/article/Promoting-Proper-Handwashing-Techniques---19897 .JnWsbYAh.dpuf

An ancient remedy to treat severe diarrhea and other gastrointestinal ailments, f***l microbiota transplant (FMT) has become increasingly recognized as an effective therapy for multiple recurrent CDI. Mentions of the novel therapy date back to fourth century China, with the practice later called “yellow soup.”
Contemporary FMT aims to restore balanced and healthy bacteria in the colon through a transfer of donor f***s and thus break the cycle of imbalance and infection, especially for those patients with recurring or nonresponsive CDI.
