Laura Ann “Lauri” Carleton had an LGBTQIA+ Pride flag hanging outside of her clothing store near Lake Arrowhead, California, to demonstrate her allyship to the LGBTQIA+ community. On August 18, a man objected to the flag and ripped it down. When Lauri confronted him, he shot and killed her.

Locally, a man posing as a roofer knocked on the door of a Staten Island house displaying an LGBTQIA+ Pride flag and verbally harassed the resident. We are grateful that this incident didn't escalate further, but we object to this anti-LGBTQIA+ behavior in our community.

Displaying an LGBTQIA+ Pride flag makes LGBTQIA+ and allied people visible and marks spaces as LGBTQIA+-affirming. The Pride Center will continue its work to make Staten Island a better place for LGBTQIA+ and allied people in memory of Lauri Carleton.

The Pride Center is here for our community. If you need support, call us at 718-808-1360.

O’Shae Sibley, a young black gay man, moved to New York City to advance his career in dance. Sibley was doing what he loved—voguing and dancing—when a group of men confronted Sibley and his friends, using anti-gay and anti-black language. A 17-year-old stabbed and killed Sibley on July 29, 2023.

The murder of O’Shae Sibley was driven by hate. Unfortunately, it is not an isolated incident: anti-LGBTQIA+ incidents are on the rise across New York City.

The Pride Center of Staten Island envisions a Staten Island where LGBTQIA+ people and families are empowered to achieve their fullest potential, where people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, races, ethnicities, and abilities are valued and feel a sense of belonging, and where allies support identities and interests outside their own. Speaking up against hate in all its forms is critical to achieving this vision.

The Pride Center is here for our community. If you need support, call us at 718-808-1360.

We demand justice for O’Shae Sibley. May he rest in peace.
