Sad (but not surprised) to report that the Red Hook Track renovation that began in 2021 and was due for completion in January 2023 is delayed yet again. Below is the statement from the Parks Dept. Press Office:
We regret this delay in completing our work at the Red Hook track and fields. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to encounter unexpected issues during excavation at our projects, and we move as quickly as possible to address such critical repair needs whenever we encounter them, as was the case here. Additionally, the contractor for this project has now been declared in default, resulting in further delays.
Background:
This project was significantly delayed by the discovery that a critical and very large DEP stormwater sewer directly underneath the track and field was failing. This emergency repair work, since completed, extended the timeline of the track and field reconstruction by several years. The work to repair that line and reconnect it to the neighborhood’s drainage system has now been completed; however, the contractor performing the work has been declared in default, and Parks is in contact with the surety on the performance bond to facilitate completion of the remaining work.
