May, 2018. Two RVRR ex-presidents. One about to embark on a difficult 50K race at Bear Mountain with several other friends, most doing their first attempt at a 50K. The other doing his duties as a rear sweep for the same 50K, trailing the last place person.

This turned out to be one heck of a day as everyone, including Tom, finished the 50K race, and all together too.

Tom O'Reilly has run a darker ultra the past year and a half, fighting brain cancer (glioblastoma). Today he went peacefully in the care of his family at 51 years old. He is survived by Elaine Acosta, his wife, and his immediate family.

Rest in peace Tom.

Staten Island "Semi-Virtual" 4 Mile Run - Clove Road and Clove Lakes Park 06/12/2020

Some good news for Staten Island runners, and those close to Staten Island who might consider running here a little. A free semi-virtual race is set to start this Monday, June 15 on the Celic Run course. The free "semi-virtual" race link is here:

https://runsignup.com/Race/NY/StatenIsland/StatenIslandSemiVirtual4MileRunCloveRoadandCloveLakesPark

I completed the video of the course yesterday. It is on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRc_auWnyjY&pbjreload=101

I'm currently working on the GPX file of the course and should be out shortly (look for it here on FB and on RunSignUp).

You can run the course anytime between Monday June 15 and Sunday June 21 (ends on 6/21 at 5PM) if you have a GPS enabled watch and an uplink to Garmin or Strava.

For those who don't, I'll be on hand on Sunday morning on June 21 between 8AM and 10AM near the Stonehenge Building to time you. Look for a guy in a brimmed hat.

We already have several entries; the more the merrier!

Bikes flying off the shelves + new cyclists = danger, danger! 😬

One of the biggest happenings I've seen recently is a whole new bunch of cyclists on the road, and now they've discovered Great Kills Park.

Yikes!

Yeah, they don't know some of the rules. And since I'm an ambassador to the sport, this matter has to be handled tactfully and in a friendly way. On both my rides on Monday and this morning, I almost had run-ins with cyclists on the wrong side of the road. Both times I caught up to them and told them with a smile that they have to follow the rules of the road as if they are driving a car. Also told them that a head-on collision is the last thing we both need. Both times I left with a smile and they rode on the correct side.

As cyclists, we have to have patience with these people as they simply don't know. Maybe the diplomatic approach will help them enjoy the sport (or hobby) more and have them keep to it for their future. πŸ˜πŸ‘

Events are opening up. Here's a brief directory of events that might be of interest to triathletes, runners, and endurance athletes:

-----

Open Water Swims at Hightstown, NJ:

PA is starting to open up to running! From Uberendurancesports:

"Today I have some good news. I was in contact with the park manager of Hickory Run State Park, and we were told, they will allow events as soon as their county moves into green. They will move from yellow into green on June 12th, 3 month before the actual race, so this sounds really promising.
All we need now, is for you guys to start signing up, so we get enough runners to pull this off.
Start training for the Boulder Field 100KM, 50KM and 18M. Sept 12th 2020

We got awesome swag, German style ultra finisher awards, great food, fun course and free camping.

If we really need to cancel, which I think we are small enough that it should not be an issue, everybody gets deferred to 2021, no extra free.

I think it's time!!! You got 3 month to get ready. You can do it!!!"

Open water swimming in NYC is still officially closed, but hopefully when it opens we can do some group swims at South Beach, Midland Beach, and Great Kills Park Beach, and Ocean Grove Beach.

---
This Saturday will be a group core workout at Willowbrook Park at 9AM at the Carousel. If anyone wants to run the White Trail out of the park at 8AM, let me know.

This Sunday at Great Kills Park at 8AM would be a group bike or group run (your choice). We'll be running or riding back and forth on the road or path through the park. Park at the Beach Parking lot.

Ever forward.

A clearer day on the Boardwalk today.

05/23/2020

Hello from the Boardwalk. Got my morning run done and am sitting by the Pavilion to enjoy a nice cool foggy day. Lots of runners here, despite the gloom.

Raindrops keep falling on my head...

05/17/2020

With 80 minutes left in this virtual race, I hit my primary goal of 50 miles and I'm probably going to pack it in now. Total mileage is 51.4 miles.

I understand fully why I am such an early morning runner on Staten Island. After my little stroll through my neighborhood I can easily summarize what I heard and saw.

I swear Staten Island has the loudest people in NYC. I experienced Italians cursing each other out in a chummy matter (I'm Italian, lol), Spanish music blaring out of cars, FRANK SINATRA blaring out of a car (WTF?!), muscle cars roaring at 180 decibels, motorbikes roaring by at 200 decibels, and dogs barking all over the place. It was actually enough to trigger my sensory overload fuse several times.

I'm going back to running at 5 in the morning.

Note: Thanks to Josh Pesin and Jacky Lee for stopping by. It was good to chat with them during this run. πŸ‘πŸ™‚

Time to join the ultrarunning circus this weekend. 7 minutes to liftoff! 12 hours on a 1.5 mile loop and ready to go.

Staten Island Virtual Race - South Beach Boardwalk 4 Miler (Memorial Day Course) 05/13/2020

For those runners in and in the surrounding area ( and ), we had a race two years ago on Memorial Day that was one of the older traditions of the Island. Although we cannot physically come together to race, we can definitely run the course individually and enjoy the day as if there was a race.

https://lnkd.in/dx9Fn-q

I'm providing an opportunity for you to run the course for free and submit your time for that course on Memorial Day weekend. If you have a GPS watch that uploads to Garmin or Strava, then you're set! If not, I will be at the Boardwalk on Memorial Day from 7AM to 10AM to time you, just pick your time to run. If time allows it, I might be around at other times during the long Memorial Day weekend.

This is an unofficial run, and will be treated as such. Although your time will be on the leaderboard, there will be no official prizes for the winners. This is just a chance to get out and run fast and to enjoy the day.

Staten Island Virtual Race - South Beach Boardwalk 4 Miler (Memorial Day Course) The Staten Island Virtual Race - South Beach Boardwalk 4 Miler (Memorial Day Course) is on Monday May 25, 2020.
