Hills are often windier, colder, and less sheltered than valleys. Weather can change rapidly. Always check the specific hill forecast, pack extra insulating layers (even in summer), a waterproof jacket, and protection from sun and wind. Hypothermia is a real risk even on mild days.

Hill slopes are particularly vulnerable to erosion. Straying off the path creates scars in the landscape that can widen into gullies, damaging the fragile soil and plant life that holds the hillside together. Preserve the beauty and stability of the terrain by sticking to marked routes.

Hill country is often working land for grazing sheep or cattle. Close all gates behind you, give animals a wide berth, and keep dogs under strict control (preferably on a leash). Be mindful of ground-nesting birds and other wildlife that use the open terrain.

Mobile phone signals are frequently unreliable in hills. A detailed paper map and a compass (and the knowledge to use them) are non-negotiable safety items. Fog can descend quickly, obscuring trails and landmarks. Always know your planned route and have a backup power source for your phone.
