Please, please, please—if you have children, start making a plan now to keep them safe in and around the water.

Florida is home to an estimated 1.5–1.7 million residential swimming pools—more than any other state in the country. That's approximately one pool for every 14 residents. With water so accessible in our neighborhoods and backyards, water safety cannot be an afterthought.

Have the conversations. Put safety measures in place. Enroll your children in swim lessons. Make sure everyone involved in their care—parents, grandparents, nannies, babysitters, and other caregivers—is on the same page and consistently following your family's water safety rules.

Just as we teach children how to cross the street safely or navigate a parking lot, water safety should be non-negotiable.

A few simple steps, layers of protection, and consistent expectations can make all the difference.

I am sick to my stomach posting this....

Florida has now lost 56 children to drowning this year. Nearly 80% of those children were between the ages of 1 and 4, and more than three-quarters of the deaths occurred in swimming pools. The most common scenario was a child getting out of the home undetected. These tragedies are preventable when families use multiple layers of protection, including active supervision, barriers, alarms, and self-rescue swim lessons.

Under 1 - 1 1.8%
1 year olds - 21 37.5%
2 year olds - 13 23.2%
3 year olds - 3 5.4%
4 year olds - 7 12.5%
5+ years - 11 19.6%

Among the 43 pool deaths:
Family Pool – 25
Airbnb/Vacation Rental Pool – 7
Neighbor's Pool – 3
Community Pool – 3
Relative/Friend Pool – 3
Hotel Pool – 1
Apartment Pool – 1

Child Got Out of the Home Undetected
31 of 56 deaths (55%)

Examples:
Slipped out a back door
Followed sibling outside
Left during nap time
Wandered from home at night
Left through a doggy door
Left while caregiver was using restroom

This remains the most common circumstance.

Police: Two children hospitalized after pool drowning at neighbor's home in Pensacola 06/09/2026

My heart is broken reading about the tragic loss of two young girls in Pensacola. According to reports, the children were found unresponsive in a neighbor’s swimming pool after being reported missing.

As parents, caregivers, and community members, stories like this remind us how quickly a water-related tragedy can happen. Drowning is often silent, fast, and can occur even when adults are nearby.

Swim lessons are an important layer of protection, but they are only one part of water safety. Constant adult supervision, secure pool barriers and gates, pool alarms, water watcher systems, and teaching children to respect water all work together to help prevent these heartbreaking accidents.

If you have young children, please don’t wait to prioritize water safety. Please, please, please enroll them in some type of program where they can learn the skills necessary to save their life in case of a fall in.

Learn CPR. Establish clear pool rules. Know where your children are at all times. And give them the skills and confidence that come with quality swim instruction.

Today, I am holding these families in my thoughts and encouraging everyone to take a moment to review their own water safety practices. One conversation, one lesson, or one safety measure could save a life.

💙 Please hug your babies a little tighter today

🏊Stroke Lessons🏊‍♂️

We’re excited to announce that we are now offering Stroke Lessons for children ages 5 and up!

This class is a great next step for students who have completed our program and are ready for a new challenge. For children who have never taken swim lessons, we strongly recommend starting with a few weeks of Basic Training to build foundational swimming skills before progressing to Stroke lessons.

If you’re unsure which class to register for or need help with the signup process, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m always happy to help!

At this time, I have blocked off 4:00–4:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, which allows for four spots per week. If demand is high, I will open an additional 30-minute time slot.

To access signups, please join my private swim group Swim Life Pensacola.

Thank you all for your continued support and trust — it truly means so much to us. We are so grateful to be part of your children’s growth and progress, and we appreciate the opportunity to teach and encourage them each week. Your support allows us to continue building a positive, safe, and fun learning environment for every swimmer.
